Is the Story good?
Between all the weird threads, I wanted to genuinely ask a question:
Is the Story holding its own merit? Just wanted to ask before I buy!
I enjoyed Nier Automata a lot, so is it roughly on that level or less story heavy and more gameplay heavy?

No one cares about the story in a game like this. That's like asking if the story in DMC or Bayonetta is good. You play this to whack enemies with a giant stick, not to listen to some sob story garbage a la TLOU.

Same story as dark souls 1 & 3.

The overarching story is not complex, nor is it particularly deep.

However, the characters in the game each have their own stories. Some you follow across multiple chapters, some are contained just within a chapter as the main 'plot' of that chapter or as side quests - and I have found these stories to be fantastic.

This game is more gameplay heavy, but the individual storylines for the characters are also very good.

the story is actually incredible. you just have to pay very close attention to some seemingly minor things in how characters are depicted and what happened in the beginning.

"black" in black myth stands for "dark secret" in Chinese. there's a conspiracy going on against the protagonist.
some people you think are your friends, are deadly enemies. some people you think are your enemies are just pressed into slavery basically to try to stop your mission and don't have anything against you.

I would have never gotten that until I accidentally watched a stream of someone going into that.. also, there is a huuuge difference between the good and the bad ending.

but the game never spells it out as blatantly as it is usual in Western games

and people saying "like dark souls" never payed attention. there is a real story because it is a retelling of The Journey to the West, but in a twisted manner, where things are not lighthearted (like the book from the 1500s) but deadly serious and with a conspiracy part added.

people just expect nothing so they ignore all the things the game tells you. this isn't BS garbage story telling that's depressing and negative like Elden Ring and such games. this is intriguing

the story is more complex than most games I've played that had a deep story. way more even.

It’s ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Might be a result of mistranslations but yeah incredibly meh. Combat is really fun tho. And graphics are insane so still probs worth it.

if you know the og novel, than no...if you know nothing, it's fine.

There isn't much story here without knowledge of JttW. Journal entries flesh out a lot but the significance of who you are squaring up against in each chapter is lost without knowing JttW.

Like if you see the intro it is awesome regardless of knowledge but if you do know then it is even better. Eventually you meet a character and because I know JttW I was blown away that he was there and how they depicted him.

I had no idea what was going on the whole time but I still enjoyed it

To answer a question - it is told in a very Chinese, and also semi-mistranslated way (some translations and idioms are really bad and mismatching at times, for western audience).
But regardless of that, it portrays the source material really well, and basically is a hidden/scrambled history of the super-ancient Eastern world. If you are into that, it helps.
It's pretty unfiltered and raw, so I personally like it a lot.

I find it interesting, especially after Chapter completions and lore from tapestry.

Very interesting story sure but I find that the different characters you run in to are far more interesting and are absolutely the star of the show.

The story is terrible and the fame itself is incomplete. But ppl just don’t care.

Story is very good, you get a high quality animation at the end of each chapter to explain more story
The monkey you play is a mute but other character talk a lot.
You can also get a huge amount of info by reading the journal about enemies, elites, bosses and npc.
The levels themselves tell a story like how bleak and meager the rat village is and how the tiger is drinking blood from a pool.
I love this type of indirect story telling that makes sense.
Most games these days have a story equivalent to the scene in attack from titan where reiner says to eren: i am the armored titan and berthold is the giant titan
