I have confused myself

So I know this game is based on the old Chinese novel "Journey to the West", and I heard from some people you play as Sun Wukong. But after playing the tutorial and watching what happened to Wukong, I'm confused. Are we playing as Wukong or a monkey who looks like him? Help

You are playing a character known as "The Destined One". By the end of the game, you will find out who you are.

Sun Wukong lost to the Buddha dudes (as it should)
skip some years, you show up as "The Destined One" and found out things went ham during Sun Wukong's absence
your job is to find the relics left behind by Sun Wukong

yeah I'm at Lingxuzi, still in chapter one. Sounds like I have my work cut out for me, I do wish we were playing as Sun Wukong, but beggars can't be choosers. It would be cool if prequel DLC came out for the game where we play as Wukong tho. Well, good to know.

It's funny how we play as "The Destined One" and have the ability to unlock everything Wukong had in the tutorial. I'll take your advice and keep playing.

During the game you should have heard many hints. You are not Sun Wukong but a destined monkey in Huaguo Mountain who tries to revive thier monkey King——Sun Wukong. The journey you experienced is exactly what Sun Wukong experienced in that famous novel, I guess there is gonna be more connection between us and Wukong later(I haven't finished the game yet).

I feel you brother, the hints were what actually made me confused. The elder monkey talking about how Wukong had "died" or something and that you're on a journey to revive him, can't wait to play more and see where this game takes me
