idk games based on japanese folklore are pretty boring

im someone who hasn't delved deeply into Japanese folklore, but from what ive seen games based on it are boring to me. The weird mythology and supernatural elements like weird demons who are more tricky than scary and gods who arent really very powerful aren't impressive threats so the stakes are just not there for me. it's goofy and not compelling. the storytelling is also trite and boring as the japanese seem to emphasize being bland and having boring, serious, and professional personalities with everyone except those with whom they are closest to can make it harder to connect with the characters and story. there also seems to be this trope where two characters have some kind of encounter and are then bound together for life and are completely dedicated to their relationship which is just not how it works in real life. relationships take time and work it's not the same as hiring an npc who is then 100% loyal to you. off the top of my head, jade empire is the only video game set in a near japanese setting to take characterization seriously. and finally lets not forget about japanese dragons. dumb looking flying snakes rather than the majestic and malevolent beings of western lore. to refer to the flying snakes as dragons is an insult to us westerners.

The Wikipedia of "Japanese dragon" says "The style and appearance of the dragon was heavily influenced by the Chinese dragon, especially the three-clawed long (龍) dragons which were introduced in Japan from China in ancient times." So it is actually a Chinese snake dragon instead of a Japanese one.

The game is based on a Chinese classic novel from the 16th century called Journey to the West. Also the Japanese "dragon" is originally inspired by the Chinese dragon. And by the way what you call a Chinese dragon is actually not a "dragon". It is called Loong and it is a completely different mythical creature to the western dragon.
