According the official information so far, the story of Black Myth game is not really based on the original novel, more like whole new story happened "after" the original story, a grimdark aftermath after Wukong finished his Buddhism journey to the west in alternative universe, but I think it's still helpful if you have basic understandings about the original canon story.
