Red chinese letter pops up on my screen during a fight...any idea what it is?

During a fight, on the right side of the screen in the middle...a red chinese letter/character shows with a depleting bar..

Any idea what this is? I tried looking it up, I haven't taken a screenshot yet

It status effects caused by the enemy. when the bar is full you will get the effect as a debuff. When the bar and letter are green it is poison, red fire, etc...
