I'm up to chapter three.

Is there any way to unlock the cicada, bat, and fox?

Ya at the beginning of chapter three. When you meet the bird with a man's face and fly behind him, you turn into a bat. The fox is later in chapter three too.

Man that'd be a nice touch for travelling back through areas for clean-up. I don't know if there is but I hope so.

It would. But so far as I can tell you can only use them for those specific events. Hoping to be proven wrong though.

So do you unlock that at the end of chapter 3?

You unlock fox form near end of chapter 3, there is a part where you slide down the snow mountain. and in the same area you will find a corpse with fox skin on his neck. interact with it and you will get an item that allow you turn into a fox. very handy, because the temple at the top of the mountain is filled with blind monks. Fox form allow you to skip alot of mobs if you die to the mini bosses. Since the shrine is at temple entrance, but all the mini bosses in the back of the temple complex.

Ok I had that item, I did not realize I could equip and use it. Thought it was a quest item or something, thanks.
