Without spoiling too much NG+ gives you a couple of other super useful spells for bosses... like a skill that basically resurrects you when you die (there is even a new pill that resurrects you if you are killed, so you can pop this pill either before the fight or when health is low and your gourd is empty). And you can configure your gourd in such a way that on resurrection you have a full gourd again. This will make bosses a lot easier to defeat.
NG+ - thus far (I am in chapter 3) has been a breeze. I died only once so far. So if you feel punished and feel things are unfair (at times they are, in my opinion(... NG+ will make you feel much more powerful if you are willing to grind a bit so you can upgrade your health and other attributes in your first run. With the new spells and gear you can obliterate bosses in NG+ that gave you a super hard time in the first run.
When that happens the spell will just do nothing, use your mana and go on CD.
It's hard to tell if it was just some poorly implemented but intentional mechanic, or a bug.
as I said in my post, this is not a bug, it's a "feature", imagine my surprise when super late, close the true ending, the game (an NPC in the game) told me that I now have this new skill to deal with bosses where my usual skills do not work.... you can then replace your immobilize skill with an all new buff skill that buffs your attacks so you can play without skills and do more melee damage. And sure enough, the endgame boss is one of those that shrug of immobilize as if it's nothing (you get the skill before the fight so you know it would be a good idea to use it for the upcoming fight).
Like you I thought the game is either cheating or it's bugged... nope, they designed this on purpose and only give you a skill to deal with these kind of bosses when the game is basically over, the new skill is basically an NG+ skill (NG+ gives you a few other all new NG+ skills).
It's apparent the devs want you to play this game at least three times, because only after the third run are all your relics are fully activated, you can activate one node per playthrough and you keep the previous node. And only in NG+ do you even have all the spells. And some of them are literal game changers. Like a spell that literally resurrects you if a hit kills you. I wish this had been available in the initial playthrough.
I have way more fun in NG+. In fact, I am punishing all the bosses and delete them in almost no time (thus far, I suppose chapter 5 and 6 will still be a real challenge). Payback! :-D
The spell itself says that more powerful enemies may break free sooner and to insure the spell is not interrupted you need to use it when they are exhausted, staggered or downed.
I have seen the timing of an attack by a boss decrease by as much a large fraction of a second. I have had my character refuse to break lock on and the camera turn in the direction I want to run.
I have been rerunning chapter 2 to acquire those items I missed on the first go around. Everything was going fine, until I got to the Black Dragon. I had just stunned him for the fourth time and was turning to run away. I had 90% health, 80% manna, and 3/4 stamina. The camera refused to unlock, my manna went to zero, as did my stamina. The boss recovered in a fraction of the time it should have, and one hit killed me. Sorry for the length of the reply, but in my opinion, the game cheats sometimes. I believe the change of the fight mechanics is built into the game intentionally.
Because you use it at the beginning, from afar, when the boss instance has not activated, I mean, before its life bar appears.
