Edit the pilgrim gear (mask, robes, wrist guards and leggings) is needed to be effective at dealing with him. Also allocate points to the different staff stances (thrust in particular is useful).
Build up focus, hit hard, keep some spells for the end when you feel the fight is going well and you're done.
thats how i save all my hp mana and skills for 2nd phase
2nd phase just run far away and wait for him to show a stance before charge slash( dodge this slash and u get to do combo on him.)
theres also skills/equipment that increase ur counter attack's i frames but it comes later
also equipment for shorter cd on invisibility spell
I can recommend early on there's a talent in foundations that's the best one ingame, when doing combo and you are say at third attack you dodge and then attack again you attack with forth attack of the combo, instead of starting over.
Also make sure to use spirit and spells during the fight. And charged up heavy attacks from first stance those are brutal dmg. I recommend keeping transformation and spells for phase 2. Also you might try this if you need cheese:
