being close minded is not a virtue - i recommend to look at games where you can play several characters such as brawlstars even though its mobile game there are many characters with didferent genders, race, etc. abilities and simply design. No matter how you spin it it was a mistake to have wukon only as one monkey type. but appreciate your responses

You could have said in the beginning what this was about, I would have avoided to waste time passing you information you lack but aren't interested in because you only care about DEI in a game set in 15th century china. Have a nice night
There is value in blank slates too, like in Morrowind, Dragon Age, Baldurs Gate, specially for played immersion and inhabitating that world.
But there isn't an universal better way to make a game, it depends on your goals.
This game wanted to tell a particular story and the devs made the best choice regarding the player character to further that goal.
Edit - This also has nothing to do with close mindedness, the people in question you were arguing doesn't seem to be against multiple characters or blank slates if it fits the game.
also, speaking of madlads, that savage in the desert with the lil guitar is such a vibe!
Being an idiot is not a virtue either.
Ancient illustrations matter because they set the lore for the "Journey to the West" story, and the devs were set on building their game inside those boundaries.
And that's ok.
Your - and others - mindless push towards "representation, race, gender" in absolutely every game is distilled idiocy.
fyi youve been reported to steam for harassment/discrimination so enjoy your coming ban
