Is there a reliable translation of "Journey to the West"?

I'd like to read the story that inspired this game but I, being from the west, can not trust that we haven't "localized" (blatantly made up) the popular translations that are in English, rather than a best-effort one-to-one translation, as we have seen happen in a wide variety of markets due to activists, idiots and trolls masquerading as translators.

Failing this, what level of mandarin understanding would be required to read and comprehend the text?

as MxWu1337-bilibili Julia Lovell is a good place to start, but it is a shortened versiojn, but in general no the only other one i could find are Anthony C. Yu, which is the full series.
