Why is this game so popular?

I'm sure I'll probably get a lot of clown awards for this, but why is this game so popular? Genuinely asking. I never understood the hype behind games like this, Dark Souls, Elden Ring, etc. and yes I have played none of them. So you have to be this monkey character in Black Myth? And you fight animals and giant insects as bosses and while the graphics are good what makes this a good game exactly? Seems like you can't create your own character, there may be limited dialogue and few to zero choices? What am I missing?

I just got it today and it's super fun, the combat is great and the game is unique as I have never seen a Sun Wukong game like ever. It's great cause you don't lose anything on death and you just go back to the last checkpoint and the bosses are all unique and it's basically trial and error until you can memorize the bosses moveset and counter it. Some cons are that I see that some people might find it confusing as it barely tells you where to go and it's easy to get lost, and the graphics might be too intensive depending on your PC specs. Other than that I think I'd recommend it. Hope this helps.

its based on an extremely popular character, Wukong from an extremly popular novel journey to the west from China. Or if your my age around 40, you would have grown up with a show called Monkey (monkey magic), which is how i know about this character.
This game is a story placed after journey to the west's story, so it would be popular in china, and anyone that like the novel.

If you haven't played them, not sure why you care. If you like super custom characters and deep dialog go play BG3. I know I loved that game too.

Yes, this mythology inspired one of the most famous and well known anime in the world and people are surprised it's this popular.

I am actually not sure. I have heard a plethora of stupid reasons, like "it's against DEI doctrine" which is borderline mentally incontinent, as if that is any reason to love a game...

I personally like this game a lot, partly because it is based on Journey to the West, a branch of oriental myth that I have always been fascinated by, and I am very happy to finally be able to play as The Monkey King in a high quality fantasy action adventure game.

I think the graphics are insanely good, I love the combat so far, I think the bosses are epic, albeit quite challenging sometimes, so it feels good to best them in combat.

I might be partial because I have an extremely well cultivated love for Chinese myth in particular and Chinese fantasy themes, but this game is genuinely good imo.

If the majority of positive reviews stem from people who just thinks they are giving DEI culture the finger, I will literally puke blood from my eye-sockets, because that is genuinely insanely stupid and beyond insipid.

I truly do believe though, that people love this game because it is very good. It is indeed scratching an itch. It is quasi souls formulaic, and takes inspiration in the right way, like many other surprisingly very good games that have come out lately, like Jedi: Fallen Order, Stellar Blade and Lies of P.

These games took many of us by surprise, because most of us thought that only one singular developer could really soothe a very particular ache we all have as gamers, but that is no longer the case, and we are all glad for it, I think. I hope.

I'll say, as someone who isn't from China and doesn't really like the devs from the history/comments I've seen, this game is pretty good/fun, there's been a lot of hype for it heading to release, the visuals etc being played up, although no one really knew what to expect from the gameplay else than souls.

That being said, this game is probably successful (and going off some Chinese people I've asked) because it's basically China's first AAA game AND a popular "IP" that everyone there knows. All those things given basically means a huge majority of Chinese people are going to play it and review it. China is also very well known for review bombing (positive and negative) so it's not surprising that this game has a crap ton of positive reviews.

Is it the best souls game ever? Really depends on what you're looking for with a souls game. After having played many in my life I'd say this is definitely up there. For presentation it's probably the top, since it definitely takes away it's visuals and compositing from character action games.

Loot feels exciting and rewarding to get.
Large variety of skills spells and mechanics.
