we’re going to break down the story of "Black Myth: Wukong"
The story behind "Black Myth: Wukong" is rooted in one of China’s most famous
novels, "Journey to the West." It’s a mythological tale full of traditional Chinese
mythology, with all sorts of gods and complex character relationships. We’ll dig
deeper into that in future episodes. But here’s the thing—if you check out the
game’s title, it says "Black Myth" instead of just "Myth." That hints that while the
game is based on "Journey to the West," its worldview might differ quite a bit
from the original. It’s like comparing Jackie Chan before he learned martial arts to
Jackie Chan who can take down twenty guys at once—same person, but a world
of difference.
The game’s story takes more inspiration from a modern reinterpretation called
"Wukong Biography." While "Wukong Biography" and "Journey to the West"
might seem similar, their core messages are miles apart.
In "Journey to the West," Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, rebels against heaven,
taking on the heavenly armies all by himself. He’s got this unbreakable spirit,
always fighting against authority and injustice. But after being trapped under the
Mountain of Flowers and Fruit for 500 years by Buddha, it’s like he’s a different
monkey. He gives in, agrees to escort Tang Sanzang to fetch the sacred
scriptures, and basically submits to the very forces he once fought against. This
change didn’t sit well with Jin Hezai, the author of "Wukong Biography." He
missed the unyielding Great Sage, Equal of Heaven, and felt bad for the tamed
Sun Wukong who journeyed west.
Jin Hezai wrote "Wukong Biography" to create the version of Sun Wukong he
believed in. The core idea is that the journey to the West was a total scam. Sun
Wukong agreed to escort Tang Sanzang because Buddha erased his memories
during those 500 years and implanted new ones. In these fake memories,
Wukong forgets his past, and his new mission is to complete three tasks for
Buddha.
The first task is to escort Tang Sanzang to the West to get the scriptures. The
second task is to eliminate the Four Demon Kings: Bull Demon King, Roc Demon
King, Macaque King, and Handsome Monkey King. Surprisingly, the Handsome
Monkey King is actually Sun Wukong himself. The first three were his sworn
brothers, comrades who once fought alongside him against the heavens. But
Wukong, having forgotten all this, follows the orders of the Buddha. Only after he
kills his former self, the Handsome Monkey King, is the final task revealed.
So, Wukong sets off on the journey west, pretty much on autopilot, fighting
demons like a machine. Some of these demons are planted by the gods of
heaven—beings that can’t be killed, only subdued, as they’re the mounts or
servants of deities. Others are old friends and comrades who try to save him, but
Wukong ends up killing them because of heaven’s schemes. The 81 challenges
during the journey were all part of Buddha’s plan.
Back in the game, I've only managed to defeat the Black Bear Demon so far. We
still don’t know if the story in this game follows the same narrative framework as
another Journey to the West game previously made by the Game Science team.
The author of "Wukong Biography," Jin Hezai, was actually the story writer for
that earlier game and did a fantastic job crafting its narrative. However, based on
the information we have now, I can’t confirm whether Jin Hezai has contributed to
the storyline of "Black Myth: Wukong." But I believe that since the game is titled
"Black Myth," it’s likely to differ from the original "Journey to the West" in some
significant ways. Of course, we’ll uncover the full story once we finish the game.

satanic nonsense and more "cultural revolutuon."

Just looked it up online, you're the ONLY person online making this connection.

It doesn't even track with the in-game story!
