Which is weird.
It's not weird if you've seen any Chinese movie about Wu Kong in the past 20 years. It's an extremely common ship.
The earliest one I remember was 大话西游, which set in an version of Journey to the West where Wu Kong reincarnated into a human. Almost every sub sequent show that wasn't a direct one for one remake of Journey to the West implied Wu Kong romancing someone often her.
This is also probably why in Black Myth Ba Jie fell in love with the Spider and had a kid with her. This did actually happen in the movie It's extremely likely it was reference to the movie.
Oh man, I kinda understand the references now.
yuuup. The game is loaded with references from other shows and movies. There seems to been a particular obsession between Wu Kong and Bai Gu Jing due to one of the earliest animation was based on their fight. For some reason it resulted in her being seen as the primary rival of Wu Kong and subsequently a love hate relation.
I think there is a bit of misunderstanding due to modern politics. I grew up in the 1990s and 2000s watching a lot of Stephen Chows movie in Central China and it was extremely popular in the Mainland. It was a different time back then. My mom in particular loved Chow Yun Fat, and would fan girl about him all the time. It wasn't until the 2010 when China really started advancing at a rapid pace.
I've seen shows from China, Japan, Korea, US, Russia, and even some horror films coming out of Thailand (really regreted that last one) growing up as a kid.
The whole firewall, anti foreign sentiment and a lot of the political stuff came in recent decade. I had access to a lot of Japanese, and U.S shows and movies growing up. Ultraman, case closed, Odder Otters, Phantom Duck, Tom & Jerry and even for some reason Punisher the movie completely uncensored (someone definitely got fired for that). It's now as much as a foreign country to me as I did first moving to the U.S.
I forgot that Stephen Chow even makes a fortune in the mainland and even make more JttW movies afterwards, which also references the Chinese Odyssey movies.

So I guess there's a connection.
