this story is already around from 2008..
do you know forbidden kingdom movie?
it literally similar story.. but different is the one who bring the staff is not a monkey but a human.. and there's a different story line of course but the background is nearly similar..
even the name is "destined one" like in game..

the journey of our MC is the same as wukong journey.. where he will got companion and will fine the artifact that wukong split into 6..

why the story like this, i will try to explain most part after his journey to the west..the title that sun wukong get is "Greatest Sage Heaven's equal" why "Heaven Equal?" is like wanted to explain you that he is same degree as heaven but not as part of heaven, because he never find heaven is fun, he is potrayed as immature always and sometimes goofy playing this and that nonstop.. he find heaven is boring.. that why he choose not to be a part of it.. and choose to live secluded with his kind in mount hua guo.. the story before the journey to the west is he already is ruin the heaven once and eating the peaches of immortality.. make a mountain down the earth in permanent fire because he destroy the fire pot.. he was punished before but not in this game.. keep in mind this game is an alternative version of story after "his journey to the west with monk tang sanzhang or tom sanchong in my languages"

I suggest reading the journals, not skipping the cutscenes and digging the side quests. I found the story fascinating and the different ways of telling the story even more so. I kinda feel reading the backstory is not actually that important (I did read the story when I was very young so I can hardly remember anything apart from the main characters' names).

However, during these tribulations, many of the demon clans were defeated and killed by Sun Wukong, leaving them with a deep grudge but no chance for revenge.

In the world of Black Myth: Wukong, the Heavenly Court has collapsed due to unknown reasons, leading to various factions vying for power. The demons who hold grudges against Sun Wukong disguise themselves as the Heavenly Court's forces and manage to kill him. However, even though Wukong's body perishes, his soul remains intact. The player’s mission is to collect Wukong's relics in order to resurrect him."
Is this the story in the chinese version?

If so it's an even more unsubtle jab at the ccp than I already thought.

the after budha version is already exist in chinese urban lore but this is new writing of that alternate version of course.. but the background story itself is always the same..
because wukong and the journey is a story to make children learn about life friendship and hardship, and theres always reward after hardship

I know that Wu Kong was kind of a loose cannon that just beat every thing the Jade Emperor of heaven could throw at him and was only stopped by the Buddha who dropped a mountain on him or something. That and he's the inspiration for lots of modern characters in various media (one of the most obvious being Goku from Dragon Ball).

To my gwailo understanding, I understand nothing. But I imagine that my experience would be similar to that of a Chinese person playing a game based off Arthurian legend.

"Who is this guy Arthur, and why does he really like tables that are round?"

you need to kinda read about the actual story to understand better. Or like dark souls you can read the journal in this to understand the story

Overall i'd say watch some info about the actual story the game will be more impactful overall. For chinese players they have grown up watching wukong and the JTTW stories so they link it much more.

this is true.. not only chinese.. but every asian part who got chinese grass like south east asia really familiar with sun wukong the JTTW story.. but there's so many alternate version the after budha story.. the best of the after budha story is where he accept the buddha title but not goin to heaven but live back to mount huaguo and take a new title as "Grandpa Great Sage" and he the one that told the story to other monkey about his journey to the west.. so that the story remain repetitive every new monkeyborn.. cause he is immortal and non aging..

the one in the game is more black more dark story of the version of after buddha story..

During opening Wukong was killed, so your quest is to revive wukong. The tale says that by collecting the remains (relics) of wukong, you may be able to revive him!

Unfortunately, because these relics are powerfull, Strong Guais have special interest on it and they held these relics hostage for their own personal use.

And they dont want to give it to you, they would rather die for whichever higher purpose these relics do for them.

So that is why, its a game that is boss after boss after boss, because only strong guais can weild these relics
