It's an action game, though; so I'm not too hung up on the story. Think of it like Nioh or the old Ninja Gaidens; the story is just a flimsy setup for you to smack people around.
Yeah, but if i could follow the story at least i would be a bit more invested. In Ninja Gaiden when Ryu goes all badass and the military base in the second game goes completely frigid with terror is nice.
Here i go around bashing heads with a stick and i don't even know why and what i am trying to do. litterally, i DON'T KNOW why i am going around killing stuff, and i would love to know, to understand, to... bloody hell i have an headache.
The Dark Souls / Elden Ring storyline is plain text compared to this.
I've felt like that since the day I was born. Consider yourself lucky that you only experience it with a random video game.
IF you really played souls-like games then you would know that this game has literally nothing in common with souls like games, apart of being an action fighting game, its more of a hack and slash....
I'm knowledgeable about Journey to the West but this story is needlessly obtuse to me.
Know some facts:
- you do not play Sun Wukong, the OG monkey king in this game.
- the OG Monkey king got struck down by Er Lang Shen (a Heaven general) and his heavenly host early in the game
- you play as the monkey who would gather all the relics (basically parts left by the original Wukong) in order to become THE Wukong
- all the enemies you face are enemies that the Wukong used to face during the 81 trials during Journey to the West (not all of course) and some new monsters.
- basically the games goes against JttW canon and plays Wukong/his monkeys as the Rebel even after completing the original JttW while the Heaven (and even Buddha) are the bad guys
There is some animation that explain the origin of some of the youkai/yaogoai you face in the game, but they are just that, explaination, they don't affect the overall plot.
Of course stuff like Zhu Baijie (the little boar guy) romance with the Spider, and the White skeleton Lady romance with Wukong are pure fan fiction.
Thanks.
Gah. At least there is a ray of light. Thank you.
Along the way you meet a lot of characters and monsters who speak in broken english. Understanding them might add some layers to the story, but end of the day it doesn't seem all that deep. Probably not missing much.
You know, maybe google what soulslike means FIRST befor you look stupid in a public forum. Just saying.
But the storytelling can be needlessly confusing.
Uh. For what's worth i am sorry.
The devs probably have the same interpretation of Sun Wukong as Chairman Mao Zedong who felt that Sun Wukong symbolises the chinese peasant who got tricked and controlled by the authority (Buddha and Heaven).
Why are you acting like this is some sort of mysterious thing? This is like extremely obvious and you figure it out when you get to the tiger like immediately. It also makes you feel bad for the rats.
One of the worst things about recent post 2010s consumerism is we feel like everything has to be explained right away. Back then in the day people just accepted they couldn't know everything right away but now everything has to be explained in detail which wrecks natural story telling.
