Can someone explain to me why (and how) this game is as popular as it is
Not trying to hate on it or anything like that, but I've never heard of the game until last month or so. And even when I found out about it I didn't expect it would be *this* big after it released. So can anyone tell me what makes it special that it has over 2 million players?

Uh huh... *looks at long winded speel of vitriol* uh... huh. You're outside... on a phone... making individual quotations and formatting on a phone screen.

Your right, I don't know a lot of ists or phobes. Because I don't think along those terms. I don't spend my days insulting people or looking to be offended by things. If you wanted me to blow up at you to justify your temper tantrums I wouldn't really need to reach into a 'bucket of isms'.

Very well, if you want an insult I'll tell you the impression you've left of yourself on me; I'm not upset with you vacillating your frustrations at me. I know you're probably the sort of person who'd never say these kinds of things to a person's face. That your greatest power is your mask of anonymity.

I think you need to get out more, learn to treat people like people. and not treat strangers with disrespect because you think they can't find you.

I could write a bunch of colorful analogies painting a lurid and awful picture. But that isn't constructive, it isn't how I spend my time.

I'm here on this forum because I intend to buy the game and support it.
You called out a "Lol, Broke" as an insult, which shows what you think of people who have less money than you.

You act the very picture of the people you claim to stand against. Maybe you are the problems you see in the world, and should stop blaming other people for your own insecurity.

I'm here on this forum because I intend to support and play this game. You're here because you're making a social justice stand against this game.

Go support a game you believe in. Enjoy the park you are apparently sitting in.
Very well said as well, I think this is the main problem with the Steam forums as well, I'm only here because I want to find out more about this game and was even planning on buying it if it fit my criteria. But no instead I get called all sorts of things just because I "somehow" didn't hear about this game until recently.
Oh well

I completely get where you're coming from. It's classic literature. But one of the human conditions I've noticed, especially in sports crowds, gaming fans and pretty much anywhere is an instinctive defensive tribalism.

You ask "Why is this so popular?"
And they read "This doesn't deserve to be popular."
The human mind tends to paraphrase.

For me I grew up knowing the Legend of the Monkey King in parts and snippets, I watched the original Dragon Ball and Goku was originally based on Sun Wukong.

There have been other adaptations of Journey to the West, but at best they've been a paraphrase, like that post apocalyptic game platformer by the same name which was sort of a grunge apocalypse retelling in its own way.

People have been hungry for a game that takes the grandeur of the original story and shows it some respect. To actually see Sun Wukong and live in his universe. To see so many various cultural icons that have been subtle used before in a current close to original adaptation in some form or another.

I hope you won't let the defensive fans swerve you away from the game. From what I've seen it has an interesting and fun storyline, and the reason so many people like this game isn't because of the politics around it, but because it fills a gap they've been hungry to fill for years. The politic reasoning is just the loudest and most vocal parts. But... that's politics. Political speak is always loud.

A similar phenomenon happened with Hogwarts Legacy, which was also obviously going to be fairly popular but it sold in crazy numbers due to the woke attempt to boycott it.

I see, thank you for your detailed response. I haven't really had the time to game a lot this year as I have some time ago so I wasn't up to date on all of the newest games and stuff so naturally I didn't really hear about this game.
And of course I haven't read the novel either so I didn't know the game was based on it either so that's why I asked that question. But now I've researched more about the game and it definitely does look nice and has its own qualities so I think I'll revisit it sometime in the future

This combined with the fact that this is like the first legitimately decent triple A-quality game the country has produced. But maybe I'm mistaken?

Well, you have an absolutely wonderful time. If you ever get around to playing the game I look forward to reading your review.

I will add that this game does take place after the book ends so it's not a retelling, more akin to a sequel.

Why do you guys insist on making this false claim? The reality is that the majority of gamers do not care. You keep saying ♥♥♥♥ like "Oh Hogwarts legacy succeeded because of the controversy!" as if Harry Potter is not one of the highest grossing IPs in existence. You say "Oh Black Myth Wukong succeeded despite the controversy" despite the fact that it IS the biggest IP in China and 90% of its player base is solely in Asia. You act like we're marketed front and center on Steam and Console marketplaces, you act like they weren't heavily hyped prior to the controversy and you act like they were genres that didn't see massive success in the gaming landscape in recent years.

Like its actually kinda wild this game isn't more popular in the west given all the circumstances are in its favor.

I very clearly stated these games were always going to be popular anyway but the fact woke leftie games 'journalists' (activists) thought it was a good idea to attack and slander the devs and try to harm the game definitely would be positive press for the game and while nobody obviously tracks stats on anti woke sales, I guarantee that helped them sell more not less.

Just go and look at the most 'woke' lefty DEI games to come out just recently to see how much gamers love that stuff overall. Oh wait, nobody is playing Concord and Dustborn has more pronouns than players lmao

"Like its actually kinda wild this game isn't more popular in the west given all the circumstances are in its favor"

You trolling? The game has been a roaring success everywhere and I have no doubt we are going to see more eastern devs want to cash in on this success, as more western studios go bankrupt because they refuse to give gamers what they want - good games not infested with woke DEI nonsense

Ok I know that it's popular over there because of the Chinese mythology in the game, but what makes it so different? Still doesn't explain why it has over 2 million people playing it

It's got fluid gameplay, a good story, good bosses and good music. I'd reckon that's enough.

Black Myth Wukong is fine and the quote from IGN was based a mistranslated. My issue isn't with the game, my issue is with you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chumps latching onto like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ parasites because you think its "taking a stand against DEI". I don't give two ♥♥♥♥♥ about the game. Could it have more variety in its characters, sure, but its competently made nonetheless. You nutjobs will find something else to latch onto, whether its a game that's listed on that dumb SBI detected group or through some of the incel content creators currently existing at the bottom of Youtube's algorithm. You'll find the next one and you'll either bombard their forum to talk ♥♥♥♥ to the developers or to defend it. And to be honest, you deserved to be mocked and harried for that.
