im not really familiar with the story, loving the game so far.
wondering what wukong did for the people to fight him at the beginning, context?
also, is this before or after like, journey to the west story

The beginning or the game is the end of journey to the west, after wukong finished his quest with the monk.

After the monkey completed this task, he wanted to go back and become his king, but the gods were unwilling (they wanted the monkey to become a god in heaven) and came to the mountain where he claimed to be king to slaughter the monkey's companions. Therefore, the monkey was very angry and fought against the gods.

I really want to help, however you know it's really hard to conclude the story of a long novel like The Lord of the Rings into several sentence, Here's just some personal thoughts.

The story of the game happens after the original novel Journey to the West, so it's more like a free creation based on original background. In the end of the novel, Wukong helps his master Tang Monk obtain the sacred Buddhist scriptures. And he is granted the title of "Victorious Fighting Buddha" - a kind of Buddha - .

this might be spoilers but isnt the main character you play as not really wukong?

If you want to know, yes. You are not the real Wukong, just an ordinary monkey, walking the same path as Wukong. In games, the NPC often say: similar, very similar. It implies that you are not Wukong, but very similar to the Monkey King they once saw

I just view on Youtube and the 2nd ending (the one with Ashura's Wrath tier fight with Er Lang Shen) is much more conclusive, but it still doesn't show anything in the JttW timeline, more like re-run.

But it seems Best Boy Nezha is confirmed! Still girly looking as ever.

I can't say too much, if it doesn't affect your gaming experience. There are many hints in the game, you can pay more attention to what NPCs say, they have all seen the real Wukong before

If im correct, look up Monkey Magic TV series. Im almost sure its from that story line.
