It does to me not having watched journey to the west in probably 15-20 years. I've added the movie to my streaming list just to see what I've forgotten which is most of it besides kung fu monkey jumping around.

yes, it doesnt need you to know anything about journey to the west, you just need to know that the story take place after journey to the west... the details of the story will get flush out little by little as you play.

The story does not make much sense as it is told in 6 disjointed chapters where some piece of the story is told. There is very little that connects all chapters into a continuous story.

you can also search for [TVB drama channel journey to the west] in youtube to get the classic dicky cheung adaptation of journey to the west made by TVB.... i think dicky is the best when come to playing sun wukung.

Having read the books, the story I've experienced seems disjointed because:
A.) I've mostly just been watching playthrus on YT so far
B.) It's been 14 years since I read the books.
C.) It was hard to keep track of stuff in the book because the names seemed alien to me.

one of the reason why it's so difficult for me to get into english translated chinese novel, the english translated name make all of them sound alien.

it also doesnt help that i watch the TVB drama adaptation of the novel, so it makes it even harder for me to track the characters mentally...

the timeline of the game is after wukong returned from "journey to the west" and get "murdered"

the story line of the game is all made up, so u dont judge if it make sense or not.
just like u dont judge if westworld tv show could really happen in reallife or not,
