"promising a balanced experience for all players, both veteran lovers of intense challenges and those seeking a more moderate experience."
...seems to be an almost impossible task. The very statement, at face value, is fundamentally contradictory. Its screams of attempting to please everyone only to ultimately please no one. There's a reason Souls games are a niche genre. You're simply not going to be able to have that level of absurd difficulty (most of it relying on cheap tricks) AND somehow miraculously be able to have the game be accessible enough for the greater gaming community ready to take the developers at their word that this is a proper action adventure game, NOT a Souls game.
I would just set a timer and if it does, in fact, turn out the devs were not being as forthcoming on the matter of "souls-like", refund it. I for one do not plan on being at all forgiving if that turns out to be the case.

Excerpt from said article - “You can’t change the difficulty, but the difficulty doesn’t remain the same for the whole game”. “As we said earlier, the philosophy is that players fight like a hero. When we were developing the game we had to make a lot of hard choices".
