Has toxicity gotten worse?
I haven't played Overwatch much since 2 came out, but I've given it another shot and am enjoying it quite a bit.
What I don't enjoy is how when I load into comp, every game it seems I have teammates that argue and go afk, or won't switch even when they're unable to play the game because they're getting countered. People leaving so often. I complimented a Widow on her shots and she left.
I don't mind a loss as long as the game feels like everyone tried. But for the last 10 or more games there's just been one or two players that ruin it for me and the rest of the team.

Is this more common than it used to be? If so, I guess I just need to find some chill people that wanna play the game instead of take rage bait at every opportunity.

Ranked at the end of a season is definitely weird.
Most players play ranked until they're happy with their rank and then leave it like that. So there are more "weirdos" at the end of a season.
Wait until tomorrow, it should be better.

Fair point. It's been so long I forgot to even think about the season timing. Thanks, I'll keep my hopes up.

It is, and I can’t fathom how much of it there is. It’s one of the unhealthiest mentalities out there, even for quickplay too.

It is and it isn't at the same time. The main issue falls to the players that purposely dredge it out. Leavers is whatever it happens if its a crash, poor internet, or sometimes just the game messing up(sucks when it happens at the end of the match so you can't go back in and get banned for 15ms and you don't get credit). But as of late the throwers have gotten more and more prevalent and it seems to just get worse as the season gets closer the end. People that throw the game, not just by being afk but by actively playing in the match but purposely doing bad or shooting in a straight line doing enough to get some dmg or blocking some dmg healing a little etc.. but not quite doing what they are suppose to failing to get to a point fast enough even though they had plenty of time. Walking up to a point and stopping just out side as the tank even though the team is fighting inside. But they get some stats so they can't be banned for throwing. Sometimes they work in pairs some times they even know each other and talk about it in chat. But they never get banned. Cause unless you watch a playback of the game you can't really tell that aren't just bad at the game. But if you watch the game play after the match you can see all the things they do that made you lose the match. The random afks at spawn the slow walk back to a point the shooting from a corner with out moving or doing anything the oh no I'm dead even though they can move or fight them thing. Not popping their shield or defensive as a tank, throwing their ult in spawn every time they get it instead of using it it correctly. Its bad when they use Mei and just keep walling off the team and going oops I'm still learning this char, but they do it every time you would be able to take a point or get an advantage in a fight and just say opps sorry.

Anyways, it gets a lot worse at the end of the season cause people get bored. Make it near impossible to move up in the lower ranks, and doesn't happen much in the upper ranks from what I hear, cause most of the peeps from Diamond + say it never happens in my games when you look at the forums. But who knows cause you can't move up if 1 or 2 out of 5 players are not actively trying to play the match. Maybe with the new ban rules in play, that will solve the leaver problem. But not so much the thrower problem, blizzard needs a more proactive approach. Maybe more live Moderators than bots to actually read some of the msgs people put into the reports then look at the matches. It could just be when they see the same user come up over and over.

Cause clearly if xxhollywoodxx is getting reported for something the last 200 games they played something is up. I name them cause they will throw the game if someone plays Moira on their team. Actively will just not tank the match until they switch off. Cause they think the character is a trash pick and the problem is they get their way most games cause people just want to play and some games the team just doesn't have a shot cause no tank. But some how they don't get banned for that.

I will just state this any online company attracts the kind of toxicity it deserves so if thats what your seeing you do not want to be around for the end as it will sink faster and faster, you get what you put out in this world and considering the state of blizzard for years now my guess is just opt out and play something else.

The game fosters toxicity.
[JRE] Joe Rogan Apr 16, 2024 @ 2:39am
Yes and its much MUCH worse than it was in OW1 combination of it going F2P, sensitive Zoomers and the abusable.report system.
ExERain Apr 16, 2024 @ 3:07am
OW2 is far more Toxic then it was, one there is no control, two report team half of it its bot system, there is free cards for certain communities even if they are racist etc, i mean toxicity escalated cause they know devs will do nothing about it, another example how they dont fix this issues EU has hackers everywhere n nothing has been done last 6 months.

id say some of it has to do with group movements in real life. most of toxicity comes from people with victum mentalities. best thing to do is just block em as soon as you see something. you can also just squelch chat and you wont have to worry about it.

just dont react to it because if you do they will just report you and then you could be found just as guilty as them.

if you never respond to people who are angry with anger you have nothing to fear.

I suppose I didn't make it clear in my post, but I don't really interact with anyone being toxic. If another teammate is getting flamed and starts to retort or act toxic back after some time, I'll try and pull them back from it. But the problem there is that whilst I can ignore toxic people, other people in my team get dragged in and behave just as bad if not worse.

i apologize. i never meant to presume you did. i was just offering suggestions if you came across it.

taking a second look though at your post yea i see exactly what your talking about. so i totally get it. fortunately blizzard has taken more intense measures to stop the issues your addressing about people leaving competitive play.

when you click the game in your steam library there are update notes you can see. one of them they are coming out with in season 10 i believe is involving the issue of people leaving competitive games. i think you cant leave more then 10 games now in a season. they make it very clear that thats the limit now. each time you leave in a short period the time required for you to wait to qunue increases and if you do it 5 times in a short time that is also a season ban.

simply put they arent even letting internet issues be an excuse which in my opinion is great. if ones internet isnt suitable to play online then its best to stay off competitive. because leaving indeed does impact the rest of your team. so they are taking that very seriously now. so rest easy on that.

just remember that it will take effect in season 10. so maybe avoid competitive play until then if you wish it.

I appreciate the apology, no offence was taken to begin with but nonetheless. Hearing about these changes is uplifting, and I agree with the sentiment that even if leaving is not the fault of the player, playing in comp with unsuitable conditions so often shows a lack of care for teammates and their time.

Whilst this of course won't solve all problems with toxicity and such, it's good to know they aren't completely abandoning helping the community bit by small bit.

It's pretty bad, always has been.
Back when OW was the most popular game out, it was notorious for toxicity.
So much so, the devs commented on it, changed GGEZ to say other things in the chat, making profiles private since everyone was constantly commenting on each others stats in nearly every mode, people getting flamed for example in arcade for having lower ranks. They've tried to combat toxicity for a long time, but nothing has really worked.
The report button is also useless.

Such is the nature of online PVP games.
