(This is a silly question, the current year does not directly matter to how fun you might find the game to be)
yes or no
- Tank: Prepare to get criticized from things that are outside your reach, as well as some players provoking you because you're not treating casual matches competitively.. Such stuff.
- DPS: If your damage numbers aren't high enough.. Once again, you're gonna get blamed for trying your bests, for getting outplayed if that happens. Yes, regardless of what you could've done about it.
- Support: You're gonna get blamed the most, regardless of your numbers.. Especially if the tank ends up getting taken out a bit too much, and that is independant on their playstyle; Even if they rush-in and take 1 Vs. 5, they do expect you to sacrifice yourself along with them.. Despite the mere idea already screaming how bad it is.
In other words-
The competitive parts of the playerbase will make this game a nightmare for you. So, if you have some experiences from the other FPS videogames, you're gonna get matched against veterans with over five times more playtime than you, then getting blamed for not performing on the same level as them.
As for the casual playerbase, however.. You'll be fine. Some may blame you, but those will only and most likely provide some constructive or reasonable criticism.. Without necessarily resorting towards calling you out, but asking you to try something else (i.e. if strategy XYZ doesn't work, give the other strategies a try).
Or, they will straight up tell you that it's completely OK. Those are the best. They're not gonna go out of their way to pin the blame onto you, they will accept things for the way they are.. Without forcing their opinions onto you, and will let you play the game as you please aswell.
To cut it short-
If you're the type to take in both constructive and unconstructive feedback into consideration and find the middle ground in those when it comes to self-improvement.. The game will play with you, you won't be playing the game.
What I mean to say is, the way the competitive players approach this game isn't nice, but too serious to even call it a game.
Unfortunately, there's no way to avoid that.
There're tonsa competitive players even in unranked game modes, there's no escape from it.. Besides playing in a premade with those whom you trust or those whom you know enough to play the game for fun. It coulda be said, that half the appetite is lost without the friendly and lovey-dovey premade where people respect each other.
generally bust damage like widow/hanzo headshot, soilder helix rocket, junk's mine combo, ect will secure elims, while more sustained and steady damage like soilder's primary will just force enemies out of their location, force them to trade CDs to stay in their position, or at the very least force their attention on to you
the game is too complex to be broken down into just numbers, chasing numbers is a noob trap if you want the most damage just shoot their tank all game but that would be hard throwing, the people who are bringing up stats in your game are prob just looking for someone to blame for their loss
only time i see stats being brought up if is there some kind of ridiculous outlier, like a soilder with more healing than damage or a lucio with like 10k damage but less than 2k heals
