Recommend games similar to Overwatch?
Title. 2024 edition, in case people can't read dates when this might be searched up later.

I quit Overwatch back in February 2023 after I finally got tired of the godawful business decisions at Blizzard (the insanely predatory monetization, the questionable reworks, Kiriko's entire existence), but even if I hadn't, the only reason I was even still playing Overwatch/Overwatch 2 was holding out for the lore and PvE, and well, we all saw how that turned out now didn't we?

But I think back to how much fun I had in those days and I genuinely miss my time spent playing from 2018 up until OW2 dropped, talking to people about the characters and world, pulling off sick wallrides with Lucio and playing discount Bastion with Orisa and some clever shield placement.

But I'm not going back to this sh!tshow, I'm firm on that. Plus unlike with WoW, Overwatch private server/emulation is still very much in infancy and probably won't be finished until after the government kills me.

So I ask you, what games can you recommend that could "scratch the itch", so to speak? The closest I've found so far is Roboquest (complete with some very suspiciously similar weapons and names), though it doesn't do it perfectly, as that's more like a weird fusion of Risk of Rain 2, Overwatch, and Borderlands all at the same time.

Additional Notes:
-I really don't like PvP, I prefer a PvE experience. The characters and gameplay were decent enough in OW that I grit my teeth and endured the PvP aspect.
-Gameplay-wise, the main draw for me is interesting maps and kits/builds to play around with.
-I also could take or leave co-op. I don't mind co-op so long as it isn't required, because I do not have friends who like shooters, unfortunately.
-I need interesting lore/world/story/characters. Maybe the majority of people who still play this slop didn't care about the story, but I did.
-NO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BATTLEPASSES OR LIMITED-TIME FOMO ♥♥♥♥. I've hated this monetization method since TF2 and Fortnite popularized it and I still hate it. ♥♥♥♥ off with anything that has battlepasses and ♥♥♥♥ off with "well do you expect to get everything for free forever?" Yes I do, it's called that's how games worked for the 20+ odd years before and that's what we need to return to.

It is not the similar gameplay style, but there is game where it looks more like Call of Duty and Overwatch 2's ability mixed, named 'XDefiant'. It is not the game I play very often but worth a try! That game also does not have SBMM and more casual compared with OW2.

Additionally there is upcoming game named 'Marvel Rivals'. You could also try that once the game comes this December 2024.

P.S. I forgot to mention PvE mode, try Deep Rock Galactic or Left 4 Dead 2.

I tried Paladins. It wasn't the worst, but it fell under the battlepass/FOMO problem (on top of being much more shallow with its gameplay and world, so it didn't even make the grinding effort worth it). I will not play anything with a battlepass again.
The only game I do play that has one is Limbus Company, and at least they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ earned it because I know that money actually goes to development and the story/world/characters all continue to be fantastic.

I do have L4D2, I love L4D2 to bits. I don't like Call of Duty though, so I'm not sure about XDefiant.

Also not really into capesh!t so I've never been into DC/Marvel properties (well, I like Batman, but who doesn't?), but I might look into it. I mean, if you can make sufficiently interesting enough gameplay with the varied types of kits superheroes would have, reliving my City of Heroes days through a hero shooter might be fun.

Well before i woulda said paladins, but they ruined their game too. Closest and best thing u got is TF2 the og. There isnt some hidden gem out there just like overwatch but without the ♥♥♥♥ company. I wish there was though, ♥♥♥♥ maybe there is.

It’s strange to completely avoid playing great games just because of their monetization systems. games like Helldivers 2 / Deep Rock Galactic / and Vermintide 2 are all excellent games, even though they include microtransactions and battle passes.

If you want a truly "ethical" dev team, play Trackmania that have a subscription model for realy cheap.

Otherwise you'll be stuck with indie games, but you'll still suffer disillusionment when they get big enough and start making DLC.
If you realy want honest indies games go look at the Splattercatgaming chanel on youtube, not all the indies games are great, but you can certainly find something that interest you before they get struck by reality

Overwatch literally has the same FOMO Battlepass issue.

Anyway, hero shooters only come in PVP. Nobody has made a PVE Hero Shooter, so you're out of luck.

Ernesto Dec 1, 2024 @ 7:00am
you have a good list to games to choose
fistful of frags
call of duty ghosts
Alien Swarm (literally L4D2 experience with aliens or something like darktide with space bugs)
counter strike 1.6
Garden Warfare 1
space marine 1
and many more
but also cod ghosts has a interesting pvp mode and the campaign is just beyond poetic.
