Just a little question about kill counts.
Alright, so I hope this is an easy question for you folks more knowledgeable about the game. Simple question: why do I so often see kill counts at the end of a game that don't add up to the number of player deaths?

Before you tell me that assists are also counted as kills, I already know that that is not the case.

If a match starts, and both teams come head to head, and one side is completely decimated on that first wave while the other side survives, all players standing, then one would expect 5 deaths and 5 kills.

But, what I seem to be noticing is that you can have 5 deaths, and the opposing team will see nearly twice that in kill counts. This number strictly excludes assists. That much I know, as assists are tracked separately and accurately add up properly. What am I missing here?

That seems counter-intuitive. The game already keeps track of assists. Why would you get two points (distributed to both assist count and kill count) for an assist then and only one for a kill? That's just an inflated number, in that case.
Assists arent earned by damage, assists are earned by anything that affects an enemy or buffs your teammates. Nade, sleep, boops, stuns, damage boosts (mercy and anas nano), etc. You cannot gain an assist by just shooting someone

multiple people get kill credit on the scoreboard if they do damage to the target within a time frame of a few seconds, assist aren't earned by damage but by buffs/debuffs instead

I see. To both of you, that explains a lot.

But, it does still seem wrong to me that that's how this game counts kills and assists. It's not intuitive. That is to say, I don't think I've seen a game that counts kills and assists quite like this one.

Thank you for your input. Those replies do solve my question.
