Competitive / Legacy competitive points can someone explain to me?

Why are golden gun and jade both use competitive points and when will competitive points convert to legacy competitive points?

End of a competitive year they turn into legacy ones, Legacy for gold, current for Jade.

I heard you can still buy golden guns with legacy competitive points, but in the weapons menu it shows red competitive points for both the golden and jade weapons. So Is there no use for the legacy points? Unless that's a mistake by Blizzard.
