Are all the Overwatch 1 heroes unlocked by default even if you didn't buy the original game?
Just tried OW2 for the first time today. I noticed that all the new OW2 heroes cost money, but the original ones are already unlocked. I'm just curious if that's because I own OW1 or if they are free for everybody even if you didn't have OW1. Also, how exactly do I unlock the new heroes? Just says "hero challenge." Thanks.

Every Hero in the Game is free

All the Ow1 heros you will unlock within your first (roughly 15) hours of the game.
The Ow2 Heros have Challanges that you can see under Menu -> Challanges -> Heros Challanges (on the top) and they mostly consist of winning matches and trying out abilities in the traning range.
Everytime a new hero releases it is unavailabe in competetive Play for two weeks giving everyone enough time to unlock it (lvl 40 or smt like that) in battlepass and after the season is over it gets added to the Hero challanges

The game is heavy pay to win. No, you need to do the challenges (activate the specific hero) you want. No new players need to grind them(ow1 heroes) because this game is about counter swapping, so it's incentivized to pay real money to win.

So if you don't have OV1 are all heroes locked to start, or do they just rotate through a few free heroes every week like league of legends does? I noticed in the DLC store that there's a pack to buy all the OW1 characters so I guess that confirms my question too.

What are you talking about? you can unlock all the heroes for free.... also they already announced that from season 10 all the heroes will not be included on the battlepass but be unlocked for everyone...

Thats how it should have always been in a game based on counterpicking.
There are literally videos online where Gm tank players leave an active comp game to buy the battlepass to unlock Mauga.
Its very hard not calling this P2W.

You will unlock the original rosters by either you bought ow1 or played ow1 free weekend before.

The new heores ow2 can be unlocked by 3 ways:

1. By buying it,
2. Hero challenges,
3. Or by level up battle pass the same time as the hero release (heroes are released every 2 seasons)

you can unlock them really quickly compared to how long it takes in league, some only require like 5-20 wins to unlock, in like 15-20 hours you should have everyone

i don't think there would be a reason to add hero rotations
