Do you have a link or can you explain?
Thank you.
They were never "locked" behind the battle pass. Unless you mean just playing the game normally, which gets you battle pass exp.

Don't even try and defend this garbage. Throwing a hero like Mauga into the game, a must pick when he came out, and putting him behind a paywall or a level 45 grind which most people don't grind for before he goes to competitive is literally pay-to-win. Ruined not only quickplay, but ranked when he got there too. Was nothing but Mauga with Kiriko and Ana, against the other team's Mauga, Kiriko and Ana. People have lives you know, and don't have as much time to play as you think.

not this season it's in hero challenges, you need to win a set amount of games to unlock them

you can buy heroes for $10 but it's a scam because the challenges are so easy and you will complete most of them on accident by playing

the only part you have to focus on is some challenges want you to go in the practice range as the hero and use their abilities on the training bots

tbh he wasn't that op release, they had to buff him

you can counter him by playing sig or dva or playing dps that are hard to hit like tracer/genji so he can't build up his regen

if you're a regular comp player you could easily unlock him in the weeks before he came out in comp, if you don't have the time to unlock him your prob not at a rank where meta even matters

he also fell out of high rank meta pretty fast as people figured out how to play around him better

It amazes me that people are so stupid to not understand why Devs lean into grinding so heavily in free to play games.

It's not even that much grinding. You don't have to play every day, that level is not that high. And if you're not going to play like 40 hours during the entire 9 week season then what does it matter if you are missing one hero

it starts as one hero then you miss another and another and so on. People have lives man. I really don't have that kind of time and part of the reason why I bought the game back in the day was the claim they said that all heroes and new ones are free.

There are games like Paladins that have kept their word at least on the hero part. Games like TF2 are old but they found a way to not make it feel like I'm missing out as a new-ish player.

The system they went to is a down grade there is no arguing that, I just wish it wasn't the case the game was a lot of fun.

If you play the game it doesn't matter and you unlock the heroes anyway.

If you don't play the game and just post on forums - then I guess it does matter and you can whine about how you don't have the new heroes.

Then don't play video games? I don't see the problem here. Even if you only play overwatch on weekends you should still be able to unlock all the heroes before the battle pass expires. And even if you can't, there's challenges to unlock them afterwards. If you hate overwatch that much, then just don't play it?

If 45h within 2months is a grind idk what to tell you. It literally takes an hour/level on avg. If you want to see an actual grind check apex.

Now that I think of it, I play an hour a day on average, and I still made it to battle pass level 125 or so last season. So you could probably reach level 45 even if you only play 3 hours for the entire week.

How dare someone ask questions on a forum, what a nutty idea.

Now, add that to every other game that has a grind in it.

This game use to not have one, at least when it came to gameplay.
Loot boxes are bad but at least the heroes weren't in the loot boxes so gameplay wasn't effected.
