This deserves a new thread.
Well, not anything else than the developers wanting to make expansion packs, or stand alone games, set after the Skaven have been driven out of the city. And a storyline where our heroes fight the undead or Chaos was hinted at.
An open world rpg action game in 3rd person mode (witcher) set in the Warhammer "Old World" setting would be perfect. BUT, imo, it should be a single player game, not a mmorpg. I think we have enough mmo's at the moment & i don't want it to fail like Age of Reckoning. It should focus more on exploration of the world & getting acquainted with the diverse scenarios & conflicts in the old world. Besides, a SP only game can make each quest & character unique & interesting, something which mmo's fail at grandly. Make it co-op for a limited no of players like vermintide, but not a full blown mmo, please. I don't want to do repeated dungeon runs with Khorne or Vlad Von Carstein or Malekith as an end boss just because someone wants to showoff the axe of khorne or the staff of nagash. Please, no group photos over the dead body of Nurgle with someone "/dance macarena" over it. That takes away the whole 'ultimate evil' feel from them. This is Khorne & Nagash we are talking about. Beings which single handedly destroyed entire civilizations! If we could just assemble 50 people & kill khorne and use his hide as a cloak, how will it look?
This is one of the prime reasons why mmo's have their lore so screwed up from the source material. Take for example WOW. Sargeras is one of the ultimate badasses in the universe, maybe 2nd only to the void lords. Now, he will probably be a end game raid boss whom only 30 random guys from azeroth can beat by repeat spamming their abilities. I dont want the warhammer bad guys to go that way. I want their menace to be felt by the players, their presence overshadowing the world. Players should have different choices on how to handle quests, morality, and the world reacting differently to the player based on their race, religion & profession. I know i'm sounding like a tier-1 racist right now but that is how the old world was. I said was because now it has become "Age of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" & i have honestly no idea what that is and i dont want a game based on the new age.
I think "K" & "Baron" have put very interesting ideas forth above which may be financially feasible. But i want to add mine to some of theirs:
- Game should be single player or 4 player co op only & open world.
-Enemies should be diverse & deadly & area specific, i.e no orcs in ulthuan or lizardmen in the drakwald. They should require tactics & co-ordination to defeat rather than epic gear or ability spam.
-Each quest should feel unique, no kill 10 of these & fetch 5 of that. Multiple dialogue options & varied outcome. Ability to flat out refuse a quest but still progress with different end result.
-The artstyle should reflect it. Vermintide is an excellent example. I wonder how the devs would visualise kislev or the border kingdoms with a bigger team and budget.
-A definite no to marriages & forced romances(dragon age:inquisition). The focus should be purely on survival & the hopelessness of the world i.e how chaos & evil are taking over.
-Mounted combat would be awesome. But mounts should be few & race specific. Please, no slayers on griffons or orcs on horses. I know that outlandish mounts are the in-thing in mmos & prime cash earners as dlc's but please, it would be painful to see a goblin atop a dragon hovering over Middenheim.
-MOD FRIENDLY
I know some of these ideas may seem ridiculous but warhammer fantasy has always been about immersion for me & an mmo just cant capture that. The old world is a dark & dreary place. I want it to be a Witcher-Dark Souls crossover. The cities & villages should feel like those in witcher but the dungeons should feel like those in dark souls. Combat should be skill based. Even the merest enemy should be able to destroy you if you engage without thinking. Though not dark souls hard :)
I don't think GW will ever license the Old World to any dev for an open world rpg after Age of Sigmar but i could not stop myself from adding my "2 cents" after reading Fateweaver's post, although it was made a year ago. If someone somewhere is listening, we need a good single player rpg after Witcher 3 to carry on the torch & push the barrier. The Warhammer Fantasy setting is perfect for this. So much backstory & good lore. And even people who were not aware of this before are getting interested in this after playing TW:Warhammer. Please, any devs want to take up the challenge? AND NO, the Skyrim Remaster, however moddable it might be, doesn't count. Period.
I also agree with the thought it would be best suited as a hybrid game in a similar vein as the Witcher series and Souls Borne series.
Those two game series have done dark fantasy extremely well.
Though one personal preference I have, is that I wish for a fluid freeform character progression similar to that found in the Elder Scrolls games or Fable. Maybe not with menus and such though, more hidden under the hood and away from sight. With you getting better at things the more you do them. And learning and earning magical power through sacrifice and intense study, risking being tainted by the forces of Chaos at any turn.
Always been more of a fan of growing your character as you go along, shaping them through your experiences and actions, rather than picking from static character classes that never change.
As for why I don't want to exclude romance and love, I feel they have always been a part of the hero's tale. Loved ones can conjure up strong emotional attatchments, if we have been given reasons and time to care for them. And if something were to happen to them, the impact could be devastating. Guts and Casca in Berserk comes to my mind when thinking about this. Or Gabriel Belmont and Marie Belmont in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
The problem I have with love interests in many rpgs is that the mechanics around them are usually shallow, and few things happen after you have "sealed the deal". If they could be made to feel more impactful and meaningful, then I would be all for them.
Same goes for the love between family members. I still remember how impactful, and shocking, what transpired between Manji and his sister Machi was.
If the game could capture such things, then I think it would just add to the darkness of the grim dark world. Though, letting some light come through, in the shape of happier outcomes, as the result of "the right" choices being made. That could be nice.
When it comes to the really monumental dark forces at work in the world of Warhammer, in my opinion they should not be touchable by the player. The Chaos Gods should always be this overwhelming and suffocating presence, an oppresive doom hanging over the World.
As you said, the thought of having a bunch of adventurers dancing over Khorne's dead body makes me want to vomit... Not that we even have much in the way of any official pictures of the Chaos Gods, last time I looked for them. Just various's artists interpretations. After all, they are gods, right? They can literally appear however they want. The player character should never be anything more than a plaything or a tool for them, or a meaningless little insect.
And I have much the same thoughts about the important and well known people. I feel they should be background characters, or backdrop, rarely if ever crossing paths with the player, though often mentioned. The player's character would be a smaller actor on the grand stage. Which would also free up the developers creatively, to make interesting new characters for the player to meet or fight.
And as for quests and objectives in general, fetch or bounty quests have their place, but they should never be more than a side dish in my opinion. And preferably a ton more interesting than fetching 50 batwings for a potion... - -
I am saying this because the universe of the witcher & warhammer have a lot in common - medieval setting, racism, religious fanaticism, strong characters & many others. Most of all, they have already got extremely well developed background lore for them which is just begging to be utilized. I don't know if it is GW or lack of faith among publishers & developers which is preventing it from happening. GW is giving its license left & right for its franchises, so why not this. There is even a warhammer chess game! (granted, its from the 40k universe, but still). The closest i have seen is the "Warhammer Quest" game, ported from mobile. I mean is that the absolute best we can get from this fantastic world or is there any hope?
Game companies can see that gamers are embracing dark fantasy settings with taboo themes & mature topics, if done artfully. Warhammer Fantasy has got one of the best dark settings. Now, i play a lot of mmorpg's. But i can't remember the last time i had been engrossed by a quest or had to really plan how to approach an enemy, unlike the souls series. Mostly, its grinding for loot, pvp, crafting, maintaining guild halls, building houses, queuing for dungeons & waiting for the next nerf. I'm burned out! Maybe it's my fault but i don't know. And i see a lot of people in the chat complaining about the same. The game fails to hold their interest for long.
That is why i think instead of an mmo, there should be a strong sp game with tight gameplay & a good story first. Even Warcraft was an rts before it became WOW & completely nerfed its established lore. I see lots of people here talking about Skyrim. It is a good game. I was introduced to the series in Morrowind & have been a fan since. Have you guys played ESO? I have and let me tell you, though the game holds it's own among the mmo's and is rapidly developing, it doesn't feel like a scrolls game. The geography & races are there but it just doesn't feel right. Remember Shivering Isles? Remember the cliff racers from morrowind? Remember Umbra? Remember the Mudcrab merchant? How many can remember anything memorable from ESO. That's what transitioning to an mmo does.
I want to experience the old world like i read it in the books. The building tension in the darkness of the drakwald forest, the misty marshes of albion, the intrigue of altdorf, the hopelesness of sylvania, the dryness of khemri. I want to see the slayer keep, orcs ravaging in the badlands, the tiny kingdoms of the border princes, kislev, ulthuan & many more. Only a sp game or 4 player co-op like vermintide can make these places feel alive, not an mmo.
Sorry for ranting on like an idiot, but i have nothing but love for the old world & really want to see a good and decent rpg out of it, without feeling like an unfinished cheap cash grab or season pass & dlc fiesta. Please, GW, make it happen.
You said exactly what I think as well, and I could not agree with you more.
The closest we have to Warhammer fantasy open world rpgs currently is Man O' War: Corsair and Warhammer Total War. Cool though these games are, they are not exactly what we are after.
