For ranged, I've enjoyed botht the brace of pistols as well as the crossbow, leaning more towards the brace. As many have said before, the brace of pistols is rivaled only by the BW beam staff for killing Rat Ogres.
Tried brace for a bit, but found it too easy to sacrifice accuracy and efficiency for getting over-excited and spamming it like a bad. I just love knowing that with my Cbow i can nail a special without needing to worry if my elf can shoot :p
The axe is my favourite too, and with backstabbery it absolutely destroys Rat Ogres, especially when combined with a potion. One of the best weapons against stormvermin, and 1 shots clanrats. Quick enough that you can kill 3 approaching rats before they can get an attack off, but after that you do need to dodge away or start blocking. Its obvious weakness is when the swarms come. Still its good enough in my opinion. The only thing I could ask for is the power attack to become an AoE sideways slash to allow it to deal effectively with the hordes - but honestly that would probably make it overpowered. The power attack is currently rather useless though, I only use it for fancy jump kills or to cut through the beams on man the ramparts/white rat/warehouse.
As I do pugs I still feel its important to take a special-killing range weapon, just in case. Normally people can deal with them effectively but I just don't feel safe otherwise; so I always take a mastercrafted crossbow - which actually does help a lot with the swarms (where the axe is weak) as the bolt can kill 5 rats at a time, so with the improved reload you can normally thin their ranks quite heavily (especially on some of the newer maps where many rats are all grouped together due to the tunnels, although its good when you find their spawn points/landing points too).
The axe has also saved my rear several times when people have accidentally pulled stormvermin patrols (or had them spawn on top of us). Stormvermin do not have a running attack so you can always get 1 or 2 hits on them, and then dodge back and they'll never catch you (so long as you do not run out of room). I've solo'd patrols on nightmare with it before; few things have ever felt so awesome.
Having mastered the weapons its always good to try the other weapons, trait and trinket combinations. There's so many rats to kill....
Rapier + Pistols is my personal favorite as it's classic
Hatchet remains "special"
Zweihander is a 2h sword... nothing special... quite boring IMO
de necro tho'...
I loved the attack style and animation and feel of the Rapier. Then 1.5 hit and the buff to 1-hand weapons made 1-hand axe just super fun. Falchion is alright but I find the reliance on headshots a bit tiring. 2-hand sword is forgettable compared to his other offerings.
