Beam Staff and how it works
If normal attack is the shotgun-like blast...

...and charged attack being the left click blast while holding right click...

...Then what does the Beam damage itself classify as? What kind of attack role does it belong to?

Sounds like a dumb question but take a look at the weapon upgradeable traits and you will see why this is actually a very legit question.

Beam staff does not have a "hold RMB press LMB attack", OP simply smoking something bad.

If you hold RMB and press LMB, you simply execute your normal "shotgun" attack and beam will stop. There's no "exploding beam" or anything else.

I'm gonna guess charged attack, I don't see what else it would classify as.

Hello

There is actually a alternative fire for the beam attack when you press the LMB while holding the RMB. It will discharge and casue additional damage to the target. And they are both considered to be part of the charged attack for this weapon.

...huh.

Well, some extra visuals would be nice to have in this case. It's quite hard to tell if something unusual is happening or not.
just tried it, there is a visual. when you discharge it you'll notice a flame burst where your laser was pointing, the flames lasts half a second but does'nt appear when you just stop clicking beam.
also you get the same staff animation than when you press LMB.
not extremely obvious but that's still a visual difference

The beam does explode on its target but perhaps its not clear enough, I will forward this to our weapon guys and see if there anything we can do to imporve the experince.

Thanks Victor, finally someone that understands simple questions and how the staff works

I thought something was up when I noticed the knockback for the LMB was much bigger when you did it during the actual beam... at least now we have confirmation, cheers!

Ever been surrounded by something like 5 or more skaven and wish you had something to just clean them from behind, sides, and front of you in one go? that's beam staff 101 for you right there. You will love it if you play with a competent wizard, but I've yet to see any in all lobies I've been

I'm level 48 playing exclusively wizard :) but I stick to my conflag, just curious about beamstaff usefulness. Do you mean that the shotguny thing hits on 360°? or does cleaning on 360° involve hitting 3 or 4 shots ? because it would generate a lot of heat.
I'm playing so I'm never surrounded :D and when things get crazy I push with a flaming sword
or were you implying that a friend BW would clean peeps surrounding you ? the shotgun attack doesn't seem too accurate and considering the friendly fire i'm not sure I would risk it. I have yet to try beamstaff thoroughly in NM/cata tho..

Beam staff shotgun blast is... essentially a shotgun, it blasts stuff in a cone in front of you. So you just come close to the mate in need and blast away everything around him by just shooting at his general direction. And no, the shotgun attack DOES NOT friendly fire, hence why it is one of the 2 preffered staves for higher difficulties, easy aoe cleaning/CCing.

As for pulling out the sword and bashing stuff... just imagine having a crapton of skaven trying to surround you... you won't simply kill them all in one slash, let alone push them all at once or for enough time that you can actually get away. Easy win? quick swap to staff, shotgun for crowd control, slash once or twice and kill them 1 by 1 while they are stunned and burning. Easy and effective
I got a green beam staff drop with a trait that add a chance for it to fire two projectiles. How does that trait even work with a beam staff? :D Two beams on alt-fire?

Had one myself. It only applies to the charged attack beam discharge. Hold right mouse button and then left click. Sometimes it has a chance to fire 2 discharges at once. It didn't seem to affect either the beam or the shotgun blast itself though
I see. Thanks for the info.

That sounds like the most useless yet useful trait for beam weapon..

indeed, if it applied to the shotgun thing, it would essentially 1shot normal rats on high difficulties.
If it applied to the beam, you could actually do massive damage overtime to specials and especially oggres.
As it is... no use at all.

But there is one thing people don't seem to realise much about this trait... the second projectile created by the trait is actually VERY inaccurate, it has the spread of a shotgun shot, it can essentially land 5 meters away from what you are aiming at in either direction. Not entirelly useful that way. And this applies to other weapons aswell, even bow arrows. The 2nd created arrow can just drop into the ground and do absolutelly nothing.

As the trait is, it is useless in every regard
it serves as "blast your teammates in the back of the head on nightmare" role. :special:
