How do you play solo?
I bought this game because it was listed as also being a solo game, but how do you even start a solo campaign? I'm not seeing the option anywhere :steamsad:

Solo as in you can play with bots filling the other 3 slots.
Interact with the map in the middle of the room, then pick a mission. You'll need to click the middle region, Ubersreik, then Horn of Magnus should be the only selectable mission. (top middle). Other regions besides Ubersreik are DLC.

Bots use your loadout for that character, so the gear you earn that you don't use for yourself will go towards equipping bots.
Set the game to private if you don't want other people joining, otherwise joining players will replace bots. The small little checkbox in the bottom right below the Play button.

If you do want to play Vermintide like a single player game, it's highly recommended you download the QoL mod that improves bot behaviour and allows you to get full loot (bots normally can't be ordered to pick up grimoires). Improved bots are viable up to the regular highest difficulty cataclysm, although you'll need to protect them from ogre/storm vermin. See KarlPower's Playing with Bots guide.

p.s. if you bought this game on the current sale at the same price that Vermintide 2 is going for, you're probably better off getting Vermintide 2. Vermintide 1 has been on sale cheap as part of bundles ($1 tier in Humble 2020 bundle, pick 3 games for $2.49 on Fanatical, etc.), the current price on Steam is quite a bit higher than that.

This was also what I figured, but then nothing happens, the game just keeps "Waiting for other players", even though it is set to private :steamfacepalm:

Does "Vermintide 2" have a regular single-player campaign mode?

Okay I did find out why I couldn't begin the missions, it was due to a missing key-bind *roll-eyes* :steamfacepalm:

Both this game and its sequel are designed as 4-player co-op experiences. You can play with bots by starting a map and having the game set to private, but it's not the intended experience, being rather dull and unwieldy on higher difficulties. So, in a way they have a single player mode, but they aren't specifically designed for that and may not be your cup of tea if you are into those kinds of games.

They are however very nice games to play in co-op with friends or strangers alike.

I absolutely hate multi-player gaming, I have played them for years and it is always the same result, I end up spending more time being annoyed by other people, than I do enjoying the game. I play games like some people read books, it is all about the story and adventure for me, I love the combat as it helps me emerge into the story and other people simply break the emergence for me :steamsad:

Anyway, I have already completed the first mission solo (damn they are long) and it was actually working really fine, only problem was the bots kept stealing my heal pots hehe :steamlaughcry:

Yeah, if you're looking for a very in-depth story and thought-provoking adventure, these aren't really the games for that. But by all means, you should be able to knock yourself out with at least a few hours of quality entertainment from them.
