Elf melee weapons.
Looking for general advice about elven weapons.
Pointy ears, seems like, got the worst of the bunch, but as always I just might not understand something about them.

Glaive?
SUPERMCNUGGET Nov 22, 2016 @ 1:40pm
Stick and move, stick and move, dodge and strike, dodge and strike!

In no particular order Sword and Dagger, Dual Swords and Glaive are generally the most useful weapons on Elf.

Advise? You will survive the maps with your eyes closed.

sword and dagger are faster..i prefer this

Dual Swords are great if you want to be effective literally just tapping mouse 1 repeatedly. There is barely any down time in the animation between combos, meaning they're really easy to pick up. You only get 2 base stam tho.

Sword and Dagger gives you a third stam and they're faster, but there's a decent gap in the attack animation that you have to get used to either dodging or pushing during in order to not get hit.

Glaive is overrated because it one shots rats but its absolutely garbage at dealing with hordes, especially when you don't have room to kite.

Daaaaym.
A giant AXE! Definitly what I want!

Also, I asked not how to do combat question. I asked what weapons are good and for what.
The only one mindly interesting are Dual Swords. But that is because you don't loose speed while blocking.

The elf actually has 3 very good weapon options.
And combos are a very improtan part of why what weapon is good, since those have a major impact on the dps/hit zones/number of targets hit in different swings etc.

1) Glaive. (Can only be obtained o nthe Drachenfels DLC map, but you don't need to own it, you can still get it if a friend hosts it for you)
Basically a two hand axe. Very high damage, enought to 1 hit one slave or clanrat per swing, plus osme leftover damage to a second rat. Slow attack speed comapred to the other melee wepaons of the elf. Very god versus stromvermin, since it's sitll very fats for a 2h weapon and your norrmal hits are armor piercing.
The charged attack is crap tho (slower, barely mroe damage, still only 1 target).
Combos don't exist (different animation (left/right side swing), but exactly identical effect)

2) Sword and Dagger.
6 Stamina (3 shields), so 2 more than Glaive or Double Swords.
Hits 1-3 rats, enought damage to take out slave and clanrats in 2 hits. Very high attack speed.
Has a 4 hit combo on normal: 1/2 are swipes with the two weapons, first sword then dagger, hit up to 3 enemeis per swing. 3/4 are thrusts with sword/dagger. Only one target, but focused right at your cursor (middle of screen) so very easy to headshot with to e.g. bypass armor.
The charged attack is pretty fast as well, with a 2 hit combo. 1 is both weapons swung crosswise, decent against armored enemies. Second is both thrust downwards together 8classic head stab from above). if yo uget used to it VERY good for taking out stormies on their heads.

3) Dual Swords
Very fast.
Hit's up to 3 rats per swing if memory serves correctly.
Basically has a 2 hit combo, first one then the other sword swung across the screen. basically no break between combo seires, so oyu have a constant flow of attacks.
Very good against normal7clanrats, slightly below S/D combo against specials since the charged attack isn't as good.

All 3 of them are very good. And on the combos, remeber those are simply chains of attacks, not any fnacy button pressing like some oher games. simply hit LMB 1/2/3/4 times to get a 1/2/3/4 hit combo etc. (or RMB for the charged ofc)

Which one is best kinda depends on what you like/wnat to do. Personaly I got both S/D and Glaive around, and just bring one or the other on what I feel liek atm.

@FlameWar

Many thanks. Currently got my first Glave and inititaly I haveno idea how everything else will compete with that gourgeous hit sound!

Also Dual Swords. Running fast with block is useful.

But what about Traits? Is there any way to make, for example, Daggers feel useful with them?

Well, traits depend a bit on the weapon of course.
As for dual daggers: No, they will never be all that usefull, no matter the traits. At least in comparison to the others. Theyx are, however, probably the best special killer melee wepaons around, but when 1 of every 30-50 rats is a special or stormie, that is not all that usefull, especialy since none of the others is all that bad against specials/stormies as well.

Some trait combinations i find usefull:
On S/D and dual swords: Regrwoth on the normal attack and ammo gain on kill.
The only melee weapon i nthe game that can come close to thsoe two in amounts of hits dealt is the rapier. So life on hit is insanely good.
Ammo on kill is fairly good as well because no matter if you use Treuflight, Hagbane or Longbow, you will have a fairly low amount of high pwoered shots, so each shot gained brings a lot of extra dmaage-dealing potential (compared to, e.g. the repeater pistol of the WH, or the swiftbow of the elf).

For the Glaive I personally prefer Bloodlust for the lfie gain on kill. You just do a LOT of killing wih that one.
But regrowth (normal attack) + ammo gain can also be a very good combo, especialy if you got regrowth or blodlust on your rnaged weapon.

The other traits are mostly mix and match as you prefer. If i rmeber right I got the trait for mroe dmaage on an enemy after I blocked them on the glaive, which does come in handy occasionaly, but msot defensive perks don't do all that much on the elf weapon since you're mainly a fast in- fast out kind of fighter that weaves back and forth in between your defenders.

Glaive is 2
Sword/Dagger is 4 max - there are four strikes in the combo. I think it chains as 4 4 1 1 with one of the "1s" being a headshot
Sword Sword is 4 max aswell I think, but you don't get the headshot in there.

Glaive doesn't have the headshot, but it penetrates armour well so you can run around chasing stormvermin just by clicking mouse one.

I use to prefer s/s and s/d, until I finally tried glaive on nighmare and cata. In these modes I prefer glaive due to the oneshotting ratties. Aslong as I don't run away from my group, (or am using NPCs) the crowd control from Kruber or Mr Beardy (forgot the dwarf's name) will keep them still enough for you to either round up in open areas, or mow through hordes in corridors and doorways.

Although, I still love S/D for the pure fun of it.

Come down to your play style! but I do recommend trying both S/D and Glaive, and keeping them on hand.

PS - the glaive is a type of pole arm, as a great/danish axe is a type of pole arm, but a glaive isn't a great axe and vice versa. :)

Do you only get the glaive in nightmare or cata, or from quest?
Or can you get it on Hard also?

you can get it at any level in Drachenfells
however it is an Elf item so it is best to carry the +elf bonus trinket (the one that gives extra elf items in the dice roll area).
There is also a drachenfells whichhunter item (repeater crowsbow).

You can get any colour of the glaive. I know of ONE person who got a white.
As for me, I played drachenfells on hard my first time through, and picked up an orange glaive (woohoo!). Didn't use it for the next 3 weeks though as I was fixated on my sword/dagger. I love it now though.

If you get any base colour, you can raise it up in specs. If you can get your hand on a Blue one, its not hard to get from blue to orange.
You could do similar from green - just a little bit more work.
(use the forge)
