yes people still play.

the first game is only like the second in that they're both co-op ratbashers. the second has a faction of chaos marauders to fight, different classes for each hero that changes their stats and provides special abilities and traits (think borderlands) and a lot of balance issues. it also has crates, which are currently not charged for in any way but are still a mess drops-wise.

To add to Jackal's comment I shall add that V1 has more smooth and responsive combat. Character movement is faster and they dodge further. Personally I find V1 more enjoyable than V2.

The V2 is the realease game of the V1, The main difference is that we are supposed to pay again to play the filled game

Fat Shark is a tiny studio that wasn't given much artistic liberty in V1. The money from V1 and a cash injection from Games Workshop for a job well done basically paid for V2. They never would have had the funds nor manpower to pull off something like V2 just starting out.

I have been enjoying the heck out of Vermintide 1. I've only had it for a short while but I'm fairly hooked on it, when I'm not ripping demons apart in DOOM (2016).

I also like playing Vermintide on my own, with my bots. The way the devs designed this game, makes it feel like you're not playing alone. The chatter between each character is awesome. Really keeps the game alive.

I must add, however, that I did add a bot mod to it, because without it, the default bots are almost useless. With the bot mod, I was able to get them to move more efficiently around me, rather than stray too far. I've also enjoyed some games with other people, who crashed in my rat bashing parade. People do still play it, but not in great numbers. Some days, there's hardly anyone on. But that shouldn't discourage you, imho.

The visuals in this game are hauntingly beautiful. Some of the best I've ever seen out there.
I ended up buying all the DLC mission packs. No regrets whatsoever.

What about PC requirements? Is Vermintide 2 more demanding?

Not sure how many people play it in terms of multiplayer, but bots are workable if you A) equip them appropriately and/or B) use bot mods. Also, there's a guide on playing with bots.

I am presently playing mostly V2 as I am curious to see how Legend is, but played the hell out of V1. The basic difference can be summed up as follows:

Vermintide has better gameplay, but less stuff: Vermintide 2 has worse gameplay, but more stuff.

Vermintide also has better balance, but to be fair it also has been out and polished longer.

Vermintide 2 is fun enough, especially for a content playthrough, but I find the gameplay in it to be considerably less satisfying. Sure, you get to use a good number of cool abilities and fight a nice variety of enemies, but for whatever reason the developers moved away from the relatively clean gameplay of Vermintide and embraced a much more button-mashing style of fighting. Along with the class abilities, weapons have much softer distinctions between them (e.g., weapons that hit one enemy at a time in Vermintide hit 2-3 in Vermintide 2, like handaxes), and stamina is considerably higher on average so you can block a good deal more. To compensate, Fatshark provided considerably more targets to hit and hit you - however, this does not really fix the problem of hordes feeling like butter and being quite boring to fight compared to Vermintide. In the original, hordes are actually pretty fun - in the sequel, I often feel like I am just waiting for it to be dead while spamming normal attacks at a choke point and the only time where they are interesting is if you get caught in the open or happen to be fighting a boss at the same time. You also generally have a chance against ogres in Vermintide regardless of your character or weapons - in V2, certain things simply do not work efficiently enough to have a chance if your teammates end up going down (though this will be addressed to an as yet uncertain extent in the coming V2 patch). As such the combat in V2 is simply not as satisfying nor rewarding of skill as Vermintide is, and generally less satisfactory.

Also, V2 has a somewhat obnxious grind associated with it compared to Vermintide. Vermintide can screw you over if you really want a particular weapon though, as everything is RNG based, but you do not literally have to achieve certain levels of math to play at certain difficulties in V1 (though if your weapons are not sufficiently good you will die horribly in V1 as well).

So in short, both games are good but the original is better for gameplay, while the sequel is better for content. I probably will go back to V1 after I get bored of leveling characters to play on the higher difficulties in V2, as a result.
