Worth playing before Vermintide 2 for story and lore purposes?
I never full played the first Vermintide. Just stopped playing after while and never came back.

Am I missing much lore and story wise, if I just go straight into Vermintide 2?

Well, story-wise... this game is not really story-driven. It is rat-gore driven. However, the interaction of the characters is really well done, written by dudes who know how to form interesting characters and spoken by voice actors who really can breathe life into those characters. The voice lines are amazing and there are so many of them; some you'll hear every three minutes, but others... I've been 600 hours in the game and still heard new voice lines. You learn a lot about the characters and their background, most of all their relations with one another. I do own VT 2 already, but haven't played so far, but from what I've read the characters have grown a bit closer and appreciate one another more. If you knew them already from VT1, you'd enjoy that quite a bit I'd guess. I am really looking forward to it.

VT 1 however takes LOTS of hours to get good at and to get good gear for. You might not really master this game before VT 2 comes out. The decision is yours.

Not terribly necessary.

There's some obvious aspects where you might not have the same appreciation for the characters or entirely know who Lohner or Olesya are (the only real major characters besides the playable ones), but the intro and tutorial briefly goes over the basics of why the gang is where they are now.

It helps a bit that the story writing isn't incredibly great to begin with, which is a strangely huge contrast to the fact that the heroes are all colorfully interesting stereotypes with great interactions.

Not required, but there's a lot of content and it's very polished.

Still a fun game to play, the action combat is awesome and worth the challenge. If you have people you could play with then that gives it a bonus. The only issue is the match making, lacking players which could be a problem when Vermintide 2 is released. I'm already seeing it now.
