To do this just put the item of your choice in one of the five slots, leave the others empty and then press the button below.
2. If you have an useful way to spend those resources (upgrading your item of choice to a better tier), then salvage away. Generally, keep an item of each type at least. Even for characters you do not plan to play. They will eventually be useful. Your bots will have the equipment you give them too.
3. Can't really say. I used to play this game when crafting wasn't even a thing. I like my loot dropped in game. Recently I came back to this game but haven't crafted almost anything since I already had all my stuff.
I would just salvage what you do not need beyond the 1 item per type and then use the tokens to upgrade each one of those items. After you have all orange gear, I would worry about rerolling the traits on the Shrine.
Outside of finding higher level gear, the main way to gain upgrade is to use Fuse in the forge, put up to five items on the same level to get one item of the level above. The item you get from fusing is based on what you put into it. Put in 1 shield/hammer and 4 handguns, you'll have 1/5 for the shield but 4/5 of getting handgun, using 5 of the same type obviously gurantees a result. You can fill empty slots with tokens(the main reason to salvage low tier gear) so that you dont need 5 of the same item.
As for general tips, dont be forget to unlock traits on your weapons, they can make a big difference in your combat ability.
Later on, I'd keep at least one weapon of each type for each character.
You probably should keep your beginner weapon and see that you get a new one from the loot table but if you are unlucky, you can still upgrade it. Fusing a weapon to the next rarity by itself, i.e. filling 4 fuse slots with upgrade tokens, gets realy expensive though.
If you don't care what you get for your character, throw in al of your old weapons and you are guaranteed to get one of them back. Just check for the same rarity level.
As a fairly new player (around lvl 30) im starting to collect orange items. Didnt have something special so far for the Waywatcher so i decided to Fuse 3x 1H-Swords and a 1x Sword+Dagger since i did like both weaponsetups. Since i got greedy and didnt have enough tokens to fuse i threw in 1x doubledaggers...guess what i got ...>.<
