Lore and character backgrounds?
I usually play RPGs, and enjoy a good story.
Is there a site that you guys would recommend that gives some lore on the area and some background on the 5 heroes?

You can find Lore Pages in game. There are a few strewn on every map. If you don't find them the first time, replay, they'll be in different locations every time. If you don't find any, you took them all on that map.

Well, the 5 heroes were createt only for the game and made canon by Games Workshop, the owners of Warhammer Fantasy and 40k.
The characters are therefore insignifcant as the whole franchise was killed.

The world and setting itself is very fast and huge, with tons of lore and fluff in it.

I can give you the following sites:

The best wikia to date, with lots of background and detailed stuff:
http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Warhammer_Wiki

Lacks in comparisson, but you can use it to compare or to complement stuff that isnt in the wiki:
http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

The last one has lots of small tidbits and good short writeups on all things, while having humour to it ( you have to add 4..c.han without the dots to work as steam censors it:
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_Fantasy_Battle

There is ofc more but you can ask anytime if you have questions.

Does this game and Total War: Warhammer take place in the same time frame?

I'd give it an "Eh"

Technically Vermintide takes place over only a few short days/weeks. I forgot which year, but it says so in the intro.

On the other hand, Total War is a little self contained time-bubble. Firstly, raising armies, conquering cities, those things take years, if not decades.
Secondly, due to the great variability of the campaign it cannot be considered canon. In one "story" the Dwarfs conquer the empire because Karl Franz shortchanged the dawi by 4 coins and Thorgrim is best buddies with Norsca. In another instance DA GREAT GREEN PROPHET builds a retirement home for orcs and goblins in the small little town of Karak Izor after befriending the vampires.
About 30 years worth of books only :D. I'm not sure if the characters themselves from Vermintide are from the books, but there are dozens of books out there, it's like the biggest fantasy lore there is.

It takes some years prior to the End Times, where Karl Franz is coronatet Emperor.
It has an own take on the story and distances itself from the End Times lore.

TWW is more like a sandbox of this world. Like if you are playing a skirmish battle in Battle for Middle Earth, that doesn't mean X really battled with Y in the LotR world. TWW is incredibly rich when it comes to characters, races, lore (though most are accessed through an ingame browser), units and so on, it's more about giving a true representation of the fantasy of these cultures, not much of a story with a start and an end, but it's great if you are looking to get to know the world.
