The Symbols on the dwarven sheilds

Are the symbols (hammers and such) the symbol of a specific hold or are they just decorative?

They're mostly decorative Bardin's story involves him protect two holds so I doubt he would pick one over another not to mention the flavor text on his orange hammer states it's foolhardy to use a dragon as a symbol and the weapon was made in dragonfire as well that the person who made it did not survive making the weapon so he probably just found a lot of his gear.

As he is a ranger, he gets around a lot, which is unusual for a Dwarf. I haven't seen the symbols yet, but it is likely a mix of different clan/hold iconography that he has picked up on his travelling.
There are likely a lot of different runes on them to. That doesn't mean they have to be magical or anything though, Dwarfs just like to write on things.

Just to confirm he does get his equipment from looting I forget which map but he says "oh I hope I can find me a new weapon here" or something along those lines.
