yeah, the "no gunpowder" thing is really only applied to priests and a few zealot units. the average taal-worshipper is alright with it. like taking a vow of (gun) chastitiy, it's more an act of exceptional devotion than a requirement of worship.
Family's a bit of a broad term, but whether he means ancestors, living relatives, or immediate family doesn't really matter as the Taal worship stuck regardless.
