Still, I hope there's a sequel, because when it works its pretty damn satisfying, so hopefully they can figure out a way to make group encounters more varied and fun. Right now its too reliant on me just perfect parrying and killing everything, which gets kinda repetitive.
Positives:
- Parrying feels amazing.
- Slicing ♥♥♥♥ up is satisfying.
- Amazing animations for Raiden and bosses like Armstrong and Sam, especially love his slow walk with the sword out to his side.
- Some really amazing boss fights: Sam and first Metal Gear are particular standouts.
- Good use of dynamic music to create hype moments.
- lots of unlockables.
Negatives:
- Horrible camera, inexcusabaly incompetent, Platinum needs to hear this, so they fix it in future games. (see DmC on how to do a decent camera)
- Lock on is a joke and shouldn't have even been in the game, the game should just auto lock on the bosses, which it does but extremely poorly, its like the camera is focusing on the wrong thing every time, this is particularly bad with the second metal gear boss. (See DmC on how to do a reliable stick based targeting system and lock on, dmc has one minus the reticule).
- Counter intuitive controls, what exactly is the B button doing on a controller besides opening loading doors and QTE prompts. That should have been either dodge or parry. The game's group combat would have been much more exciting if you had parry to a separate button.
- horrible weapon switching, and ♥♥♥♥ stealth sequences, like really why?
- Unskippable credits, this is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and not okay, I don't care that you can alt-tab or do something else, stop the egotistical ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kojima and platinum.
- Way too many codecs, cutscenes, that you have to listen to or skip every time, its just annoying. Please add an arcade mode that disables all the stuff besides combat encounters in future games.
- inability to replay specific parts that you miss to get higher ranks, you can already reload checkpoints, so why couldn't we just have a way to go to whatever encounter we missed and wanted to get a higher rank on.
- Repetitive non-boss combat: As it is now, on very hard difficulty, all I essentially do is wait for first guy to run up, perfect parry, murder them all with vanquish slides blade mode. It would have been much more exciting if the encounters with groups of enemies were better paced like the boss fights, a mix of offense and defense, its too much you die or they die fast.
- Poor DLCS, bland environments.
Conclusion.
in conclusion, the game is massively flawed, but I keep going back to it, because when it works its incredibly satisfying, lets hope a sequel with a proper development schedule will really take this to the next level.
