If you are talking right at the start of the battle I usually just rush to his face land a couple of hits, dodge his lava attack twice and continue attacking.
Little tip if you do heavy, heavy light attack the combo will stagger armstrong eventually
(I played most of the game with a polearm, which essentially turns any input into combos that I don't have to think about too much)
One of the lava attacks stays there - and will damage you (for a lot more than any other thing) if you even touch it accidentally. I'm having particular trouble avoiding touching it after it's there - both because dodge (the actual dodge) is very short (and I often end up still within it), and because I would otherwise have to stop fighting for a while, and it feels counterintuitive.
I think you are talking about the Fire wall that he does, that wall you literally have to be lucky so that you dont end up in a tiny spot, it eventually goes down, you just have to keep avoiding Armstrong preferably it's best to parry him just to make up time
The issue is that doing anything else (attacking him, for instance, or using "dodge") risks bringing me in contact with the lava wall through animation.
Should be on time stamp if not battle starts at 28:30 that's basicly how you should try it even tho I use the combo I told you about, it's actually just (H,L) like in the video below (3:49)

Just using that move and dodging can get you to his first rock throw pretty fast.
The fire wall doesnt take that long to disappear but you can also try to go to his back when he is doing that attack, it should give you a way bigger field to play normally like in this video (2:13)

It looks significantly faster than for me in the game.
The 28:30 one? No seems pretty normal to me
