Do this right away. It will likely solve your problem, as you shouldn't need any third-party software to play this game properly with a Ps4 controller.
You can access Big Picture by going to View(top bar in steam)>Big Picture Mode. In Big Picture, click the Cog @ the top right and go to controller settings.
Alternatively, right clicking 'most' games in your library should give you the option to 'customize controller settings' which pulls up Big Picture and goes straight to the controller settings page.
Anyways once you're there, you can configure your controller & change many important settings including telling steam which controller firmware to use which fixes most games with controller recognition issues.
