Nuyen problems
I've just done the mission at the Brotherhood and now have a measly 4 nuyen. There's a sidequest that will pay several thousand, but I'd have to do it alone. I've only bought one weapon and couple of spells through the course of the game, no augs or anything either. Was I meant to get some money at the end of that Brotherhood mission or what?

This is a great example of sidequests being non- optional.

Its also a great example for having a fixed amount of anything in a game (Games being "too" linear") , or the burden of "requiring" things like shadowrunners at expensive prices just about every mission.

Its too easy to mess up your gameplay when the game is too restrictive, trying to make the player "make tough choices". Having to think ahead is one thing, having to make a choice between a half a stick of bubble gum and a shoelace isnt an imersive choice, especialy for a game that prides itself on "winning it big" as a runner.

So have I already screwed my self over by spending my initial 1300 nuyen before I even did the Royale apartments?
basically

Before the Royale Apartements?
No you havend, you didnt need Runners in the Apartments and after the Quest you can get Money for selling the Gems you get.

What about the option to tell Delilah you don't want to pay the runners up front?
And OP: do you have grenades, drugs, or other stuff to sell to scrape together the cash you need? If you've got access to a heal spell (either a Bear Shaman or a mage who knows it) you can still squeak by with just you and a runner; it'll just be rough.

It's not really a linearity problem. Linear games are much easier to design and predict player actions in. It's open-ended games where player action can't be predicted and accounted for. You should get enough for 3 runners on each mission, plus the weapon upgrades and some spells.

As it stands now, I've been given enough for, say, 2 runners on each mission and a few spells plus one weapon. That's not a problem of linearity, that's a problem of the devs failing to figure out the very basic overheard of doing each mission and supplying enough nuyen for that - or of failing to communicate to the player that you don't have enough for a full team and a summoning token each mission.

Yeah, looking back it seems that that's the best choice by far. At the time it struck me as the choice that would be good in the short term but bad in the long term (like having to pay some loan shark a percentage of all future earnings for the rest of your life). It turns out it's the other way around.

Luckily for me, I always checked the numbers on hiring my team last, so I knew what kind of financial "cushion" to keep.

Well I spent all my money going into the Brotherhood mission (I just bought 3 runners) and expected to get more through the mission, or at least some stuff to sell. Prior to that, you got money or an item that sold for a lot on each mission, so I didn't expect to have my pre-Brotherhood cash needed for 2 or more missions rather than just the next 1.

One important thing to do in this game is to look for extra stuff during mission, most of them have at least one thing you can grab and sell to Van Graas afterward. When the game give you free runner for a mission, take them. Some runner cost less than other, make sure to think about those too.

By the way, if you pick the option to pay them with your earning post-mission, Delilah just tell you no.

Yeah, I found extra stuff each mission other than the last one. I felt I was being pretty thorough too since I had the janitor costume, the Brotherhood uniform and had read every single note around. I found a couple of grenades in the room before the final fight, but that was it. And yeah, I've always taken Coyote when she was free before. She's suddenly decided to start charging, though. Terrible timing for her to get stingy.

At the end of the game I didn't have anything to spend my over 10K nuyen on before the last mission. And that includes hiring runners for every mission (I usually took the free and low cost option for at least one runner when available, like Paco or Coyote, or the Shaman). Money was almost never an object after the second mission.

Not to be a super douche, but.. read. There's someone you're supposed to meet, and when you get through that you'll have some more scratch. Gives you plenty to hit up the sidequest, and that gives you even plenty more for things beyond.
