Best place to start for a beginner?
I'm just wondering what car is best to use for someone who isn't used to actual racing sims (only "light" racing games).

In career mode, it starts you with 125cc carts. That would be the best to get used to the controls and timing. You can select any track but race against the AI racers which by default are fairly easy to beat. Also, if you are not using a wheel, I feel it's a LOT harder.

Hmm, OK.

I read somewhere that carts are a frustrating place to start, but I can't find the post that said that (or what it recommended instead).

I've got a Rift on its way here, and I plan to buy a wheel, though I'm not sure which wheel would be best yet.

Make sure to checkout the GOTY Edition as well it features all the dlc, as you don't own Project CARS yet.

I intend to. ;)

Lest you think this entire thread weird, I've actually already bought the game for my friend, who used it to test out my Rift, because I had it sent to him first, because I don't live in the U.S. and don't want to spend an extra $200 on the "I-don't-live-in-America" tax.

But the gist of the thread doesn't change any based on that.

How did you know I don't own the game yet?

Ford Focus at Brno.

It has a mouse beside your name if you own it.

Slow road cars. Ie Toyota gt86, ford focus, audi a1, BMW m1 etc... put on soft tyres in the dry if they have them.

Track wise oulton park, donnington park, Monza, brands hatch etc...

Don't try to drive fast ....take it slow and once you know the track speed up bit by bit. Find your braking points and stay smooth on throttle and brake.

Once that works and you stay in the track reliably at speed you will be ready for more.

Enjoy :)

Does it support VR?

It seems so, officially or not officially people are doing it. and if you only have a controller (not a wheel) assetto corsa feels far better to controll then project cars. In Assetto, when driving, it feels much more natural. In project cars i think i spent more then 30 hours of 40 in just trying to make the cars not spin out. Trust me, Assetto corsa is just better.

Your opinion not mine.

Project Cars is easily best sim Ive played warts and all.

Nothign wrong with AC but I switched to pCars and never looked back.

There is much more content in Project Cars. Yes AC has mods but vast majority are sub par.

Well, the force feedback in AC is better, the ai is better and the cars handeling in AC is better...gameplay forfront designs that just make Ac a much more playable game. Actually fully playable compared to pcars. I just felt like the handeling needs allot of work in p cars and the ai is blind and unaware of your position. Makes up for a frustrating experience and these are not opinions but broken or unfixed code.

AI is a lot more fun in pCars... in terms of Ai hitting you - adjust your driving style, work on track awareness and dont expect them to give you room at every turn works wonders.... you need to give them space aat times just like real life. Sure there are times when they completely ignore the track but I can work with that...

Asseto Corsa racing AI can be a snoozefest...

Btw load up AC Zandvoort or Red Bull Ring with the new F1.... no better than the quirks in pCars .....

If you have not dialed in the FFB for sure pcars does not shine - but its not hard to dial in now thankfully and once it is its simply a better experience to me all round.

He wont go wrong with either sim but his preference will be his preference.. ie we may all like apples but some of us prefer grannie smiths and others prefer golden supreme...

For you predictable train of cars might be preferred from Ai perspective but I prefer the more aggressive approach and drive accordingly.
