Can I still play season 1 when season 2 comes out?

You have to especially make a seasonal character for the seasonal content server. The vanilla game is always there for you to play free of any and all season-based gimmicks.

I take it whatever gimmick the first season has is not accessible to 'acquire' outside of the first season mode though correct?

The seasonal cosmetics in this game blow. You can buy you some asymmetrical bundles of in game currency to access the outrageously priced nice stuff at any time though.
