Windows SxS (side-by-side) error resolution

Hey person that packaged this for steam. Your executable depends on:

Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762"

But you forgot to include the correct VCredist along with the game. Please fix it. For those who have SxS issues in the meantime, use the following link to grab the the missing DLLs:

Didn't fix the problem for me. (I know, the thread has been dead for 5 months and Imperator comes out in 2 weeks, but I'm impatient!)

If you still get a WinSxS issue after installing the package above, another DLL might be missing on your machine. As said before, this product has been sloppily packaged. Without performing a couple of checks on your machine it is not possible to figure out what is missing.

On Windows 10 you can figure out what is missing by checking your event log.

• In the start menu type Event Viewer. Windows should find an application with that name
  
  
• Now select the Windows Logs -> Application-log from the tree structure on the left.
  
  
• Now in the right column select Filter Current Log.
  
  
• Click the drop-down-arrow next to the box labeled Event sources.
  
  
• Scroll down and check SideBySide.
  
  
• Click OK.
  
  
• There should be only events from the SxS service in the box. Look for the newest entry. Check the gray box below whether it says something like Activation context generation failed for "... ... ... RomeGame.exe".
  
  
• If not step through the entries until you find you find an entry pertaining to RomeGame.exe.
  
  
• Once you found it, post the content of the gray box here.

For example, in my machine the gray box contained:

Activation context generation failed for "D:\games\Steam\steamapps\common\Europa Universalis Rome\RomeGame.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.OpenMP,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

You can try to find the DLL by yourself if you do not want to wait. But do NEVER download one of those missing DLL installers from some shady third-party website. Only execute it if it comes directly from microsoft.com!

That is exactly the file that was missing on my system. Hence, the error should be solved by installing the redist-package from Microsoft linked in the first post. Reminder:

If that does not do the trick, you could also try to install the following update. However, I did not have to do that. So I would be surprised if you need it.

This is a 32 bit game. Hence, regardless whether you own a 32 or 64 bit OS, you need to choose the 32 bit version when installing the above packages.

When confronted with a prompt like this by the Microsoft website,

[X] vcredist_x86.EXE          2.6 MB
[ ] vcredist_IA64.EXE         6.3 MB
[ ] vcredist_x64.EXE          3.0 MB

choose the x86 version and then click "Next"!


You may want to reboot after installing these packages. If it still does not work, you could try to trigger a "Windows Update".
