Question about game setting and location.
I love this game, let me get that out of the way, but I have some questions about where in the world it's actually supposed to be. I assumed, because it's a Mad Max game, it's set in a masssive desert, and the cars are right-hand-drive, that this game is set in Australia.

But then I found an American style interstate sign with the name Gallup on it. Now, Wikipedia tells me there are three places named Gallup. One of them is in New Mexico, one is in Kentucky, and one is in South Dakota. All three of these places are in the United States, and out of these three, only Gallup, New Mexico could be called a city. The other two are loose groups of houses that barely show up on Google Maps.

Now, Gallup, New Mexico is certainly large enough to have some industrial areas, and certainly in the desert, but it's hundreds of miles from the ocean. This is a problem because the Great White is supposed to be a dry seabed.

So, my question is this: where is this game actually set? I don't know if I'm taking a single highway sigh too seriously, but I feel this is a genuine question.

I dont know whether the use of the name Gallup is supposed to be a little innuendo or tribute, or whether it just "sounded" right. My GUESS is that it's just a coincident altogether.
And the accent of many of the chars plus the steering wheels on the right side are, IMO, much more prove that the game is set in Australia, as the movies were, than the use of the name Gallup.

Old post.. but can't find anything newer either... I guess it's supposed to be Aus (Being mad max) but then I've come accross a few US style roadside diner buildings... which I'm not sure they have in Aus (not having been a local could help here) And as you say some of what appear to be US style straffic signs, but again perhaps they are like that in Aus?

The only real thing that could place it is the massive harbour... but with what seems like very little city area behind it, there doesnt' seem enough rubble for it to have been somewhere big - ie a specific place - So I'm thinking it's just all made up.... the bridge is called "Bay Bridge" but that again could be lots of bays....

Yeah the aussies have roadside diners everywhere.
Hell you have them in the UK. Even outright US style ones, there's a few chains who set out to recreate that "authentic USA diner experience"

I'm fairly certain this game takes place on the coast of Australia, probably somewhere near the Great Barrier Reef. I gathered all of this from the clues in the game and the landscape itself. It might also explain why the Great White is so huge and "impossible" to cross; imagine driving from Australia to, well, anywhere.

While these are quite common in the south, not as many in the North, though I live behind one that got featured on the Travel Channel once.

Its sweeeeeeeeeet.... only thing that I find annoying is that when I start it up it seems to default to "new game" rather than resume lol.... now when that's the biggest problem I had....

Did find another location description last night that mentioned the area used to include large reefs

It's based in Australia... Why it has American type elements I have no idea, but what I can tell you is that the Wasteland is infact Australia. If you look at Chumbucket's Hideout the wall has a massive shadow of Australia. I get that alot of Americans aren't educated on our country but yes Mad Max was made and is based here.

I think everyone knows it is supposed to be in Aus... I quess the main questiona are

a - is it a specific location... you know like say the big docks is Sydney harbour or some other port/dock town/city etc

b - why are there so many apprent americanisms.... someone already anwserd the diner issue... roadsigns though?? Do the ones listing places look like the big green ones?

Though I think I've found the anwser to b at least... game was made in the Swedish Avalanch Branch... so maybe they did some google images searches and as they usually do they mixed right and wrong results. "They" being google.. not the game maker

That's right! The game Was made in the Swedish Avalanche Branch. What would they know about Australia unless they lived here? It is obvious that they would mix Americanisms with this game. As of specific locations they were just made up. e.g. The Citadel doesn't exist in Australia. There are no 3 close rock formations that are That big. The idea probably came from the Three Sisters. What it seems here is that the locations could be inspired but it's nothing exact of anything.

You generally find them as part of motorway service stations.
You know like those "Welcome Break" places. It never ceases to amuse me that we have multiple chains of places like that.
Also Little Chef. While not US style diner is a diner. Actually do Little Chef even still exist? They were not doing well.

Yeah not seen a US diner in a services, but there is one in my local city centre... I've only really traveld south of the midlands though.. and Wales, but of course not everywhere lol.

Little Chef do indeed still exist. There is one down near gatwick at least, and a few little random others... best avoided though lol
