actually, though unlikely, I really wanted a stance system. I.e. the fighting style is not just based on a generic weapon class skill, but what "stance/style/ryuuha(流派)" your adopt. We can say that currently, there are just 4 basic styles based on weapon types.

In my "imagination", even within a weapon type, there can be different styles, e.g. one that attacks quicker but less damage, one that attacks slower but boosts block, all with different animations. some can even have a different grip (e.g. reversed grip?). And of course, every kenshi player have thought of this at least once : nitouryuu (二刀流) aka dual wielding.

Each stance/style would be like a skill itself (with the current weapon skills as the "generic" style that everybody will figure out eventually). Specialized styles has to be learnt explicitly. Either from a master who already knows the style, or from a long lost manual or something like that. Until it is leant, it will not be available. Oh yeah, would be nice if you can capture a character who knows a fighting style and interrogate it out of himm... mwahahahaha,

The specialized styles would have special animations different from generic (attacks and blocks), as well as potentially unlocking special moves (maybe as a "critical hit" which uses different animations?) at higher skill levels (may carry strength/dex requirements too)

Active styles can be chosen from the inventory screen beside the weapon boxes (primary and secondary weapons each requires its own specified styles). if none is specified, default style is use. For "dual wielding" styles, both the styles for primary and secondary weapon will be "linked" and both weapons will be used, if the weapon type fits the style.

And add modding support. Then modders can recreate all the styles from real-life martial arts into Kenshi :)

End result? even if everybody is equipped with the same weapon type, fights are going to look a lot more ... interesting...

well, in a dream far away I guess.

Not likely. Different stances for similar weapons irl don't have such a thing. And some are just superior to others. Doesn't matter if both combatants have a Katana. If one person is trained in a classic Kenjutsu and the other the French military sabre technique, the military sabre will always come out on top.

But this is due to reach and the positioning of the weapon itself. Something Kenshi can easily reflect.

I think weapons need a whole lot of balancing ayway.
Katana seems to be the only light weapon and is the only weapon that relies on only one stat: dexterity, which is trained by using a katana.
By far most of the other weapons are in effect heavy weapons even if they are not called that in-game, rely on strength and dexterity *but do not train dexterity*.

So training a weapon other than katana means you have to first train katana to level up dexterity, and thus takes about twice as much time as leveling only katana.
In addition most other weapons have a very slow attack, and it looks like leveling a weapon skill works on a per-hit basis, so fewer hits = less xp. In addition to that a slow attack means the character gets interrupted more often, further reducing the speed of leveling up that weapon skill.

Besides katana, of all those other weapons only sabre class weapons are viable for low level characters.

I find that with strength and dex at about 50, any high-grade non-katana/non-sabre weapon still is far less effective than a katana.

Thats incorrect. Dexterity lists multiple ways to train it outside of using Katanas.

Heavy Weapons relay on strength and are intended to be slow but do a lot of damage.

Sabres seem to be more geared toward Defense an.

Katanas relay on speed .

and i hope they don't add artificial balance keep the weapons relatively realistic.

But more stances an styles would be nice while they are deemed not very effective in combat i've always loved draw styles for combat.

Look again. Dexterity lists only one way to train: "Attacking with light weapons".

The game does not explicitly state which are light weapons but apparently katana counts as such.

Heavy Weapons relay on strength and are intended to be slow but do a lot of damage.

Heavy Weapons also rely on dexterity.

Dexterity lists 3 stats that are affected by it:
attack speed
block speed
cutting damage

All of those apply to all weapons (except cutting damage does not increase if the weapon has no cutting damage to begin with).
So heavy weapon attack speed increases as your dex increases (also as strength increases) - it's just that heavy weapons do not train dex.

All weapons will train dexterity, but the lighter it is, the better it is at doing so. So using your 60kg fragment axe will indeed train up dex, but it'll do so at such a slow pace that it is hardly worth mentioning. So to train it, really just use the lightest weapon you can find, and I think the wakazakies are the best for training dex simply becuase of how light they are.

speaking of insanely heavy fragment axe, when i finally switched from my nest scavaneged fragment axe (preweapon balance patch) to the most powerful weapon in the game (lvl 3>? Falling Sun) i was really disappointed to discover how light weight it was compared to the fragment axe id had for hundreds of hours. I reallly expected this thing ot be heavier, i wish i had a 60fragment axe again that did more damage to make the weight worth itn http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=781093321 LoL falling sun for weapon, fragment axes for weight training :P

CaptainGunner is correct. All weapons train both dex and str, but the ratio balance shifts depending on weight. The heavier it is, the faster you'll train strength, and the slower dex will increase. The lighter it is, the faster your dex will increase, and the slower your strength will.

They both train on all weapons, but katanas are the fastest way to train dex.
