Repeat until you have two pairs in your inventory and just leave things there as hunger will drop your effective strength by 90% at the worst the slavers will allow and three pairs (two in inventory and one equipped) will be enough to be at the 25% xp rate which is the max it can get without carrying someone.
Be wary about actually taking food, though. You won't starve to death so long as you're in NPC custody, but that all changes once you try to escape. It's good to know where the food is so you can take it with you, but if you eat it all and then become hungry again before you're ready to leave, then things will become much much harder!
As soon as I was able to knock slavers out in their sleep and carry them to the cage, it became a whole different game altogether : )
All those heavy shackles will build your strength.
Don't be afraid of getting beat by guards. Let it happen a lot. You'll build toughness and get some martial arts xp in the process. When you lose, they'll just put you back in a cage and bandage you up.
As a slave you'll be starving all the time. That's fine. Figure out where the food is but don't take it. Wait until you're ready to escape, then grab the food and eat. Wait for the starving/hungry debuffs to clear. Once they are gone, you'll be able to run faster than the guards can (provided you've gained so athletics while slaving away) and escape will be as simple as outrunning the guards and flipping them the bird as you vanish over the horizon.
Works the same for that one house in The Hub as well as the abandoned village on the north coast, and pretty much any others - exception being container contents.
