How an obscure mod from 2019 fixed persistent crashes on loads and on zone transitions
Hi all. I'm playing with a heavily modded save. Despite following the load order suggestions to the letter, I was faced with the aforementioned crashes. Lacking the computer science understanding of what's going on under the hood, I can describe it as the game suddenly being overburdened and giving out.

This guide heavily stabilised my game, but did not stop the core issue:

The reason is likely because I'm running roughly 100 mods, some of them drastically altering the zones while other adding new mechanics and world states.

What fixed it for me is using the "Kenshi CTD fix patch" by user "kapaer" on Nexus Mods. The mod was uploaded on Nov 2nd 2019 and last updated on May 30th 2024. As far as I know, it is not available on Steam Workshop. I will not link to it to avoid breaking any Steam forum rules.

After installing it, I've had precisely 0 crashes. The game will still chug but it manages to make it through the slowdown.

I've made this post so none of you have to deal with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I've gone through while trying to fix it.

I'll also point out kapaer's mod is so good that it even got recognition by the devs. The fixes in the originally posted version got implemented into the game itself (they have continued to update the mod though, so now it includes non-implemented fixes), and even got their name added into the game in honour of their work.

It really is a great mod, and worth grabbing for anyone experiencing frequent crashes. Also fixes some other common bugs, like characters falling off walls during load game.

And Nexus links are fine. Long as it's not an inappropriate mod you're linking to.
