but you can also just tank it.
i use a combination of both when i play. since i tend to use that mod in all my playthroughs.
Against "large groups of enemies", anything with the "heavy swing" animation is really nice to have. Which is everything except katanas and sabres. Bunch 'em up and chop 'em down.

I still tend to prefer sabres for their defensive buff, though.
Top tier martial artists in light armour sort of just ricochet around the battlefield like pinballs, very quickly downing singular foes. They're "best" if you want speed.
However, fight enough enemies and eventually even your best units will drop. More armour typically means you can take on larger groups before this becomes a problem, so big metal plates are the "best" if you want stamina.
Then I made 6 Shek in the same gear of Falling Sun and master heavy armor decimate blister hill, and another test of 6 MA as above decimate Blister Hill, the MAs still take nearly half damage, and do more damage.
So whatever it is, MA pound for pound do 40 percent or so more damage, and take 40 percent less damage. That is the answer.
This is depressing, because I like collecting Meitou weapons and either way they are both OP. I just cannot play the game the way it was intended because MA conquers in power, and collecting Meitous are meaningless unless you can wall it off.
But what is the benefit in having more damage and taking less, when 6 people are enough to "decimate" a whole town anyways?
And just for the record: it also works with light armor and Katanas, and non perfect stats. maybe add 2-3 people...
Also the Meitou Falling Sun needs 80 strength, which means as soon as Your people take damage, they swing slower. That´s not taking into account that the MA people are probably faster because of equipment anyways. To really test it You would need the same equipment on both, and not some which buffs the MA people, but debuffs the Falling Sun people...
Crossbows are OP, as they mean You take zero damage 100% of the time if You micro it. Will You now only run with crossbows, which You can buy reliably in masterwork quality, because they´re "better" than MA and Falling sun combined, even if You´re naked and don´t need armor?
The question is, if I want to be uber towards the end of kenshi why would I play a heavy weapon/armor character with max skills?
And also, I think MA is cheesy. You cannot tell me it is RPable to play a nearly naked top skilled monk who can one shot anything better than some one with a blade. Kung fu is stupid. Haven't you seen those videos of MMA pros challenging ancient martial arts teachers in China and them getting crushed in like 10 seconds by an MMA fighter? How do I roleplay being that.
And nobody really needs the damage of the endgame weapons with maxed out stats - or the MA damage. One can defeat all enemies without these, maybe with the few exceptions if You would want to duel the few "bosses".
Like said: crossbows are cheesy - if You combine them with scout legs for 50 speed...
And what´s more cheesy is stealth and assassination, because one char without weapon can change world stats - and with 100 stealth he can sneak in front of the people and bump into them without being seen in darkness. One single person. No fight, no damage received, just knock the boss out and carry him away - and then the Holy Nation city belongs to someone else. And even more ridiculous is to kidnap the person as "training partner" when this is the strongest guy in the game - so You basically only "need" the training to defeat someone, who is already Your prisoner...
Roleplay =/= min maxing.
Roleplay means to dress for fashion, and use weapons for style points. Else everybody would only use one certain playstyle in any playthrough. The most effective one. Like if You roleplay as a trader You probably wear traders leathers, even if there are multiple better armors in the game. And as a weapon You have some horse chopper, even if it´s the worst saber. Or You take a Katana as main weapon instead of a Nodachi, which would be the upgrade to it.
Also like only one enemy in the game uses high level martial arts - and no weapon or MA user can win vs a fast player crossbow user. Its impossible for obvious reasons...
