Capturing towns, villages, outposts?
Is it possible to capture towns outposts and other camps? Defeat and claim them? And what, if any, are the advantages? Do you get any kind income or taxes from occupying them? And do you have to post guards, or do the AI NPC guards that were already there just respawn under you faction name.

Just curious how it all works and what the strategic purposes would be for the game?

In that case, how could we change control of a fortress or town? I need for example to get rid of the holy nation in Orkan's shield as it is the gateway to the desert, they are causing trouble for my trade with the United Cities. Could I ally myself with a faction and help them capture Orkan's shield? Or better yet, if I kill everyone in a fortress, they will still respawn?

You can't take control of towns... but also, you can. My faction bought up all of the available properties in Catun and turned those buildings into different things; a greenhouse, a medical research facility, a shop, a warehouse, a residence and a museum. If you're in good with the faction that controls the town, that's an added bonus. You have solid protection from wildlife and bandits, other shops that you can use as resources, and bars that provide you with a steady flow of drifters to bring into your ranks. In fact, having experienced both sides of it, I would never run my own settlement. There's just too much micromanagement and risk involved for someone who prefers being out in the world having adventures to creating economic process loops (although those do exist in the framework I've created).

As for your question about the Holy Nation, you can't clear out and take control of their towns or fortresses. You can capture them, but they will simply revert to the control of other world states such as the United Cities, Flotsam Ninjas or even bandits or creatures.

there are event triggers that once you decimate certain towns, they could be taken over by a NPC faction. or become ruins. depending on what conditions are set for it to happen.

visit city of Heft and speak with emperor Tengu. If you are allied with the United Cities, you can get a mission to capture Okran's Shield. If successful the United Cities not you, will own the fortress.
